WNBA to Expand Regular Season to 50 Games Starting in 2027

The WNBA is adding more basketball to its calendar. Driven by surging viewership and a transformative new collective bargaining agreement, the league announced it will expand its regular season from 44 to 50 games starting in 2027. The move represents a major operational shift for the league, pushing the season deeper into the fall and providing fans with more opportunities to watch the sport's biggest stars.[1][3]

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert framed the expansion as a natural response to the league's current trajectory. "Demand for the WNBA has never been greater, and expanding to a 50-game regular season reflects the extraordinary momentum we are seeing across the league," Engelbert said in a statement. She emphasized that the longer schedule is a core part of the league's commitment to growing the game globally.[1][6]

The expansion was made possible by the landmark collective bargaining agreement ratified in March 2026. After intense negotiations, the players secured massive financial victories, including an increased salary cap of $7 million and average salaries soaring to roughly $600,000. With players now compensated at a much higher level, the union agreed to the longer schedule, a condition players had previously stated was necessary for any season expansion.[5][6]

The jump to 50 games is a striking milestone for a league that played just 28 games in its inaugural 1997 season and never exceeded 34 games until 2022. The new structure also pushes the WNBA Finals deeper into the calendar, extending the season's end date to no later than November 21 in 2027, and November 30 starting in 2028. This is nearly a full month beyond the previous limit of October 31.[3][7]

A longer season will fundamentally change how teams are built and managed. With the new CBA requiring teams to utilize all 12 roster spots—ending the practice of carrying only 11 players to stay under the salary cap—coaches will have to rely heavily on their bench. Playing 50 games will test endurance and make deep rotations a necessity for championship contenders, shifting the strategic landscape of the league.[2]

Players and coaches have largely welcomed the expansion, viewing it as a sign of a healthy, thriving league. Atlanta Dream head coach Karl Smesko noted that with new expansion teams entering the league, a 50-game schedule gives fans more opportunities to see their favorite players and builds stronger local rivalries. However, the extended calendar does present new challenges, particularly for international players who traditionally spend their WNBA offseasons playing in overseas leagues. Portland Fire center Luisa Geiselsöder acknowledged the physical toll, noting that the shortened break between the WNBA and winter seasons will require careful load management. With the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire joining the league in 2026, and franchises in Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia set to debut by 2030, the WNBA is rapidly scaling its footprint.
