Standings Watch: Malawi and Zimbabwe Cling to the Inside Track Ahead of High-Stakes African Netball Qualifiers

The road to the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydney runs straight through Nairobi. From September 19 to 26, Kenya will host the Africa Regional Qualifiers, where the continent's top emerging teams will battle for just two remaining tickets to the global showcase.[1][6]

With continental heavyweights South Africa (ranked 5th globally) and Uganda (6th) having already secured automatic qualification based on their December 2025 world rankings, the door is wide open for the next tier of African nations to make their mark on the international stage.[1]

The Malawi Queens, currently ranked 9th in the world, enter the qualifiers as the presumptive favorites. The Queens recently wrapped up their 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign in Glasgow with a gritty 54-47 victory over host nation Scotland, securing a seventh-place overall finish.[3]

Under the guidance of head coach Deborah Fuller, Malawi has been integrating youthful energy with experienced veterans like Australia-based shooter Mwawi Kumwenda. A recent four-match test series against Zimbabwe in Blantyre allowed Fuller to test new combinations, signaling that the Queens are peaking at exactly the right time.[3][5]

Hot on Malawi's heels are the Zimbabwe Gems, who have surged to 11th in the global standings. The Gems are eyeing a historic "treble"—their third consecutive Netball World Cup appearance following successful and highly celebrated campaigns in 2019 and 2023.[2]

Zimbabwe Netball Association (ZINA) president Leticia Chipandu has orchestrated a rigorous preparation schedule for the squad. Following a bronze-medal finish at the Celtic Cup and the recent test series against Malawi, the Gems' technical staff believes the team's tactical maturity has never been sharper.[2][5]

While Malawi and Zimbabwe hold the inside track, Namibia's Debmarine Desert Jewels are the tournament's ultimate wildcard. Ranked 15th globally, Namibia has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the past year and is eager to disrupt the established hierarchy.[4]

The Desert Jewels recently clinched a bronze medal at the 2026 Pacific Netball Series in Brisbane, Australia, defeating Samoa 54-36 in the playoff. Head coach Julene Meyer has praised her squad's ability to absorb pressure, making them a legitimate threat to steal a World Cup berth in Nairobi.[4]

The qualifiers will also feature Zambia, currently ranked 17th, who previously broke Namibian hearts in a thrilling extra-time final at the Africa Netball Championships. They will be joined by host nation Kenya, Botswana, Eswatini, and Lesotho, all looking to play spoiler.[1][2]
