Robinhood Unveils Ethereum Layer-2 Network for Tokenized Assets and On-Chain Finance

Robinhood has officially launched its own Ethereum Layer-2 blockchain, allowing users to trade tokenized real-world assets like stocks and ETFs around the clock. Built on Arbitrum technology, the permissionless network attracted over $250 million in total value locked within its first three weeks.

The short answer

  • Robinhood launched its own Ethereum Layer-2 network, Robinhood Chain, on July 1, 2026.
  • The network is built on Arbitrum technology and uses ETH for gas fees.
  • It is purpose-built for tokenized real-world assets, allowing 24/7 trading of stock tokens like Apple and Nvidia.
  • The permissionless chain attracted over $250 million in total value locked within its first three weeks.
  • The launch validates Ethereum's scaling roadmap and bridges traditional finance with decentralized applications.

On July 1, 2026, retail brokerage giant Robinhood officially launched the public mainnet of Robinhood Chain, a dedicated Ethereum Layer-2 network. Announced at the company's "The World is Flat" conference in London, the blockchain is purpose-built to bring traditional financial markets and real-world assets on-chain, merging Wall Street infrastructure with decentralized finance.[2][3]

The flagship feature of the new network is "Stock Tokens"—ERC-20 digital tokens that track the price of major equities like Apple and Nvidia. Unlike traditional brokerage accounts restricted by Wall Street's standard market hours and clearinghouse delays, these tokenized assets can be traded 24/7, held in self-custody wallets, and plugged directly into decentralized finance applications.[3]

Robinhood Chain is not a standalone Layer-1 blockchain; rather, it is an Ethereum Layer-2 built using Arbitrum's Orbit technology stack. It processes transactions off the main Ethereum chain to achieve lightning-fast 100-millisecond block times and near-zero fees, while still relying on Ethereum for final security and settlement. The network uses standard Ether (ETH) for gas fees, avoiding the need for a proprietary network token.[1][2]

Robinhood Chain saw rapid adoption in its first three weeks of mainnet operation.

The network has seen explosive early adoption from both retail traders and decentralized finance protocols. Within its first three weeks of operation, Robinhood Chain amassed over $250 million in total value locked and cleared $4.5 billion in decentralized exchange trading volume. More than $200 million worth of ETH has already been bridged to the platform, signaling strong appetite for tokenized assets.[1]

Because the chain is permissionless and fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, independent developers can build on it without Robinhood's explicit approval. The ecosystem launched with major infrastructure partners like Chainlink and Uniswap, alongside native offerings like Robinhood Earn—a lending product yielding an estimated 7% APY on the USDG stablecoin—and perpetual futures trading via Lighter.[3]

Robinhood is also positioning the chain as an "AI-native" environment. The company anticipates a future where AI agents execute trades and manage portfolios directly on blockchain rails. By providing a low-latency, high-liquidity environment with predictable first-come, first-served transaction ordering, Robinhood Chain aims to be the foundational infrastructure for agentic on-chain trading.[2][3]

Tokenized stocks allow investors to trade equities 24/7 and hold them in self-custody wallets.

The launch serves as a significant institutional endorsement of Ethereum's scaling roadmap. While some critics have questioned Ethereum's performance in recent years, Robinhood's decision to build its Layer-2 on the network reinforces Ethereum's position as the preferred settlement layer for enterprise blockchain applications. This dynamic has driven renewed demand for blockchain developers specializing in rollup technology and cross-chain bridges.

As the integration of traditional finance and crypto accelerates, Robinhood's 28 million funded accounts give it an unmatched distribution channel for real-world assets. The success of Robinhood Chain could pressure other major brokerages to develop their own on-chain settlement layers, potentially kicking off a tokenization supercycle that permanently alters how global equities are traded and custodied.[1][3]

Why it matters

By putting traditional equities on a blockchain, Robinhood is bridging the gap between Wall Street and decentralized finance. This enables 24/7 global trading, self-custody of assets, and new programmable financial tools for everyday retail investors.

What’s still unclear

  • How the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will ultimately regulate 24/7 tokenized stock trading.
  • Whether other major retail brokerages like Charles Schwab or Fidelity will launch competing Layer-2 networks.
  • How the network will handle extreme market volatility outside of traditional Wall Street hours.
