Global Golf Injury Report: Matti Schmid Sidelined by Broken Elbow as Hillier and Penge Battle Late-Season Setbacks

The grind of the global golf calendar is starting to collect its toll. As the 2026 season hits its high-stakes autumn stretch, the physical demands of cross-continent travel and relentless tournament reps are sidelining some of the sport's most promising rising stars.

The heaviest blow landed this week when 28-year-old Matti Schmid announced he is out for the foreseeable future. The German standout, who has established himself as a regular presence on the PGA Tour, revealed he suffered a broken elbow following a fall.[1]

"I wanted to share some unfortunate news," Schmid wrote in a statement to his supporters. "I recently had a fall and broke my elbow. Because of this, I'll be stepping back from golf for a few months to focus on a full recovery, and I've had to withdraw from my upcoming tournaments."[1]

Schmid's broken elbow abruptly halts a massive 2026 campaign. He had climbed to 86th in the Official World Golf Ranking and delivered a stellar performance at the PGA Championship in May, where he played in the final pairing and secured a tied-fourth finish.[1]

Over on the DP World Tour, the injury bug is rewriting tournament fields in real time. Ahead of the Omega European Masters in the Swiss Alps, New Zealand's Daniel Hillier was forced to pull out of the field due to an undisclosed injury.[2]

But Hillier's bad break cracked the door open for the week's wildest storyline. His withdrawal opened a spot for 41-year-old Mike Lorenzo-Vera, who had emotionally retired from professional golf exactly 12 months ago at the exact same event.[2]

Lorenzo-Vera, who was simply visiting the area, received a last-minute phone call to step in as the first reserve. "Back at it," the Frenchman joked to the DP World Tour broadcast, noting that while he felt for Hillier, he was ready to tee it up alongside Patrick Reed and Jayden Schaper.[2]

For Marco Penge, the battle hasn't been a sudden break, but a grinding, season-long war of attrition. The 28-year-old Englishman punched his ticket to the PGA Tour after a three-win tear in 2025, but has been candid about his ongoing struggles with an ear, neck, and nervous system issue.[3][4][5]

The problems stem from a severe viral infection Penge contracted at the DP World Tour Championship last November. The lingering effects forced him to withdraw from the U.S. Open earlier this summer and have deeply impacted his stateside rookie campaign.[3][5]

"The whole season has been a bit of a nightmare, really," Penge admitted ahead of the Husqvarna British Masters. "Trying to find a way through it and nothing was happening and continued playing... It just got way too much for me personally from a mental and physical standpoint."[3]

Penge's transparency highlights the grueling reality of competing across multiple continents while managing chronic health issues. "It's a lesson I've learned in my career," he noted, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing physical recovery over tournament reps.[3][5]

The LIV Golf roster isn't immune to the late-season physical cliff, either. Elvis Smylie, a 24-year-old Australian, was forced to withdraw from The Open and subsequent events due to a lingering rib injury. "It is with great disappointment that I have to confirm that, due to a rib injury that has been causing me some discomfort, my medical team has advised me to take an extended break from golf to undergo rehabilitation to return to full fitness," Smylie wrote.[6]

As the tours pivot toward their high-stakes autumn schedules, the focus for Schmid, Hillier, Penge, and Smylie shifts entirely to rehabilitation. The next verifiable checkpoint for Schmid will be his medical clearance date, which will dictate whether he can salvage any part of the early 2027 season.
