Global Basketball Injury Report: Hartenstein Out for Germany, Nunn Undergoes Knee Surgery

The global basketball calendar rarely pauses, and the late-August stretch has brought a wave of significant injuries that are reshaping international tournaments, EuroLeague preseasons, and the WNBA playoff race. From national team withdrawals to training camp setbacks, rosters across the world are being forced to adapt.

The German national basketball programs have been hit particularly hard this week. The men's team lost Oklahoma City Thunder center Isaiah Hartenstein, who suffered an ankle injury that will keep him out of the upcoming FIBA 2027 World Cup Qualifiers.[2]

Hartenstein, who recently signed a three-year, $75 million contract with the Thunder, was set to make his highly anticipated return to international competition after an eight-year absence. Instead, following consultations with Oklahoma City's medical staff, he faces a two-to-eight-week recovery timeline to ensure he is fully healthy for NBA training camp.[2]

The German women's team suffered parallel blows ahead of the FIBA Women's World Cup in Berlin. New York Liberty forward Satou Sabally announced she will miss the home tournament as she continues to recover from a concussion sustained in late June against Las Vegas.[3]

Her sister, Nyara Sabally of the expansion Toronto Tempo, is also sidelined. Nyara is currently in a walking boot with a left calf injury and will be re-evaluated in a few weeks, further depleting Germany's frontcourt depth for their home tournament and dealing a blow to Toronto's late-season rotation.[3][5]

In the WNBA, the physical toll of the late season was on full display Saturday night when Connecticut Sun rookie Raegan Beers suffered a jaw injury. Beers was struck in the face by Los Angeles Sparks forward Dearica Hamby while battling for a rebound early in the fourth quarter.[4]

Hamby was assessed a Flagrant 2 foul for unnecessary and excessive contact and was ejected from the contest, which the Sparks ultimately won 77-68 to snap a six-game losing streak. Beers did not return to the game, and her status for the Sun's upcoming back-to-back set remains uncertain.[4]

Across the Atlantic, the EuroLeague preseason has been disrupted by a major injury to Panathinaikos guard Kendrick Nunn. The American scorer underwent surgery for a medial meniscus tear in his right knee, dealing the reigning champions an early hurdle.[1]

Nunn is expected to miss six to eight weeks, a timeline that sidelines him for the entirety of training camp and likely the opening games of the EuroLeague season in late September. He had been a crucial offensive engine for the Greek powerhouse last season.[1]

For Panathinaikos head coach Zeljko Obradovic, the timing is delicate. The team has revamped its roster with several new additions, including Sylvain Francisco and Brancou Badio, and integrating them into a cohesive system without their primary scorer will complicate the early weeks of their title defense.[1]

These August injuries force teams to weigh short-term risks against long-term goals. For national federations, it means adjusting expectations on the fly, while club teams must lean heavily on their depth before the season even hits its stride.
