France Seizes Overall Lead in 2026 FEI Eventing Nations Cup Standings Following Strzegom Victory

Team France has officially taken control of the 2026 FEI Eventing Nations Cup standings, surging to the top of the leaderboard following a decisive victory at the LOTTO Strzegom Horse Trials in Poland. The French squad delivered a masterclass across all three phases—dressage, cross-country, and show jumping—to secure their 20th all-time Nations Cup win and leapfrog early series leaders Great Britain and Germany.

The leaderboard shakeup is a direct result of the FEI's newly implemented 2026 format. Instead of a simple cumulative points race that runs until the end of the year, the season now features five qualifying legs, with each nation's best three results counting toward qualification. All scores will then reset to zero for the grand finale at Boekelo in October.[1]

Because France and Austria were the first nations to log a second start this season, they were able to bank crucial aggregate points early. France's victory in Poland gives them a commanding mid-season advantage, effectively guaranteeing their spot in the Boekelo final while putting the pressure back on the British and German squads who dominated the opening legs at Marbach and Bicton.[2]

The winning French quartet—Arthur Duffort riding Gueule de Reve, Verane Nicaud on Eau Vive de Brenne AA, Baptiste Salaun aboard Hexcazel Duverie, and Lucas Brun partnering with Happy de Brion—finished with an unassailable lead over the demanding Polish track.

French team manager Cédric Lyard praised his squad's tactical execution, noting that they traveled to Strzegom with a clear qualification strategy. "Strzegom remains one of the most challenging and best-organized tournaments on the international calendar, which makes this victory even more meaningful," Lyard said, highlighting the discipline required to keep all four combinations competitive through the final show jumping phase.

While France took the team gold, the host nation had plenty to celebrate. Team Poland secured second place in front of a passionate home crowd, marking their sixth podium finish at the Strzegom venue—their most successful stop on the international circuit.

The Polish effort was anchored by a spectacular individual performance from Katarzyna Brandys. Riding Sel Oscar, Brandys captured the individual class victory with a final score of 41.40 penalties, delivering a massive win for the domestic fans in a World Championship year. Teammates Pawel Warszawski on Cagliostro PKZ and Mariusz Klemiuk on Monaco provided the necessary clear rounds to lock up team silver.[1]

Austria rounded out the podium in third place, matching their best-ever result at the venue from 2022. The Austrian effort was spearheaded by Harald Ambros on Vitorio du Montet, who finished second in the individual classification with 49.80 penalties.[1]

Austrian Chef d'Équipe Thomas Tesch called the podium finish a "great reward for the hard work of our riders and support staff," noting that banking qualification points at the halfway mark of the season was a critical objective for the federation.

The 2026 series now turns toward its fourth leg at Avenches, Switzerland, in mid-July. With France sitting comfortably at the top of the standings, the Swiss leg will likely see heavyweights like Great Britain, Germany, and the United States deploy their top combinations to answer back and secure their own tickets to the Boekelo finale.[1]
