Bubby Upton Completes Miraculous Comeback to Win Bramham Horse Trials Following Third Spinal Surgery

British event rider Bubby Upton secured a profoundly emotional victory at the 2026 Defender Bramham Horse Trials, successfully defending her CCI4*-L title aboard the grey gelding Its Cooley Time.

The victory lap in West Yorkshire marked the culmination of a grueling three-year medical saga that nearly ended her career—and her ability to walk.[2]

In August 2023, Upton suffered a catastrophic schooling fall that resulted in a complete burst fracture of her L3 vertebra and a horizontal fracture of her L2.[1][2]

Surgeons performed a six-and-a-half-hour emergency operation to decompress her spinal cord and fuse the shattered vertebrae with thick titanium rods.[1]

While Upton miraculously returned to the saddle by 2024, the extreme biomechanical forces of elite eventing took a hidden toll on her surgically repaired back.[2]

In July 2025, the titanium rod stabilizing her spine snapped completely in half, leaving her in agonizing pain and forcing a third major surgery in November 2025.

During that third procedure, her surgeon, Dr. Ivan Timofeev, was forced to remove the broken metal entirely. Because she no longer has the natural bone structures to hold up her spinal column, Upton now relies exclusively on raw muscle strength to support her back.[1]

Supported by the British Eventing Support Trust and the Injured Jockeys Fund, Upton dedicated herself to an intense Pilates and gym regimen to build the necessary muscular scaffolding.[1]

The grueling rehabilitation paid off. Upton arrived at Bramham in June 2026 riding up to 11 horses a day entirely pain-free for the first time in nearly three years.

Her dominance at Bramham began in the dressage arena, where she and Its Cooley Time posted a spectacular score of 24.2, taking an early lead.

The cross-country phase, however, nearly derailed her comeback. At the third fence, the horse's martingale broke, removing her primary means of controlling his naturally high head carriage.

Displaying elite horsemanship, Upton leaned down mid-gallop to tie the broken strap to her breastplate, successfully navigating the massive track with just 3.6 time penalties.

Entering the final show jumping phase with a razor-thin 0.9-penalty margin, Upton delivered a flawless clear round to seal the victory, cementing one of the most remarkable injury comebacks in modern equestrian history.
