Digital marketing agencies and social media consultants routinely advise brands that "positive, uplifting content is the key to organic reach." The empirical data directly contradicts this. When researchers analyzed 7,000 articles published by The New York Times over a 3-month period to see which made the most-emailed list, they found that positivity alone does not drive sharing. A massive cross-lingual study published in the ACM Digital Library analyzed 2.5 million posts across 4 distinct languages to test if cultural context altered the sharing threshold. The researchers found that while baseline sentiment preferences vary by culture, the high-arousal activation requirement remains mathematically constant.[2]

However, this commercial framing often conflates genuine emotional resonance with engineered outrage, assuming that any high-arousal state will automatically yield a positive return on investment for a brand.[6]

The reality of information spread is more complex than simply pushing an anger button. According to Cognitive Resonance Theory, for high-arousal content to actually trigger a share, it must align with the user's pre-existing beliefs or identity. A piece of content that induces anger will not be shared if the anger is directed at the user's own ingroup; it must validate their worldview to cross the threshold from passive consumption to active broadcasting.[4]

This physiological reality explains the current architecture of social media platforms. Recommendation engines are not explicitly programmed to surface polarizing content; they are programmed to surface content that maximizes engagement velocity.
