WHO warns of 'complex' Ebola outbreak as Nigeria confirms first case of Bundibugyo strain
Key point: The World Health Organization warned of a complex regional outbreak after Nigeria confirmed its first imported case of the Bundibugyo Ebola strain.
The World Health Organization warned on Thursday that Africa is facing a "complex" Ebola outbreak landscape following Nigeria's first confirmed case of the virus. The patient, a woman who recently traveled to Uganda, tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain in the capital city of Abuja.
The imported case makes Nigeria the fourth African country affected by the current outbreak, which originated in the Democratic Republic of Congo in mid-May. The epidemic has since become the deadliest in the DRC's history, resulting in over 4,000 deaths from more than 9,000 confirmed cases, while Kenya has also reported nine infections.
Nigerian health authorities have begun tracing 44 contacts of the patient and face political scrutiny over the deployment of a ₦10 billion emergency preparedness fund. The Bundibugyo strain is particularly concerning to health officials because it currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment, complicating containment efforts.
