Spain Extends Unbeaten Run to 41 Matches With 3-1 Victory Over Czech Republic
Lamine Yamal, Rodri, and Mikel Merino secured a 3-1 Nations League win for Spain in Oviedo, overcoming a disciplined Czech side. The victory keeps the world champions perfect in Group A3 while extending their historic unbeaten streak.

The Czech Republic arrived at the Estadio Carlos Tartiere determined to frustrate the world champions, deploying a disciplined low block designed to suffocate space and force midfield turnovers. Spain, however, stepped onto the Oviedo pitch fully intent on dismantling that rigid structure with rapid ball circulation and early, decisive strikes.
It took just six minutes for the hosts to crack the defensive shell. Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal collected a pass from Dani Olmo, found a sliver of space on the right edge of the penalty area, and curled a spectacular 18-yard finish into the far corner.[1]
The 19-year-old's strike marked the third consecutive international match in which he has found the net inside the opening 10 minutes, further cementing his status as a primary Ballon d'Or candidate for the upcoming award ceremony.[2]
"I think he never stops surprising us," Spain manager Luis de la Fuente said following the match. "He has so much talent, so much quality, that we still haven't seen the best version of Lamine by a long shot."[1]
Despite the early setback, the Czechs refused to collapse under the relentless pressure. Goalkeeper Antonín Kinský produced crucial saves to deny Álex Baena and Pedri in quick succession, keeping the visitors within striking distance as Spain dominated the opening exchanges.
The sustained pressure eventually broke the Czech resistance again in the 35th minute. A flowing attacking move culminated in a loose ball falling to Rodri inside the box, and the midfielder swept an unerring finish into the top corner to double the advantage.[1]
"They are well drilled, I thought it would be one of the hardest games and that's how it was," Rodri told Spanish broadcaster TVE. "It was tricky but we got some chances. There are some matches in which you can't generate that much, but the team was able to manage the match."[1]
De la Fuente opted to rest Yamal at halftime, and the tempo predictably slowed in the second period as Spain looked to control possession. The Czech Republic seized the initiative, narrowing the deficit in the 69th minute when Adam Hložek slipped a pass to Jiří Sláma, who drilled a low shot past Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.[1][4]
The visitors briefly thought they had equalized late in the half when substitute Ryan Naderi capitalized on a spilled ball by Raya. However, the referee immediately disallowed the goal for a prior foul on Spanish center-back Robin Le Normand.[1]
The Czech comeback hopes completely evaporated in the 85th minute. Defender Ladislav Krejčí cynically pulled down debutant striker Roberto Fernández, earning a second yellow card and reducing his side to 10 men for the final stages.[3]
