Global Volleyball Injury Report: Wachholz and Vander Wal Suffer Season-Ending Blows as Lavia Returns
Iowa State and Texas face major roster adjustments after losing key attackers to season-ending injuries, while Italian star Daniele Lavia makes an emotional return to the court.
The global volleyball calendar is exacting a heavy physical toll this autumn, forcing major collegiate programs and international clubs to navigate significant roster disruptions. While some athletes are just beginning grueling rehabilitation journeys, others are finally stepping back onto the court after months away from the net.
NCAA Contenders Lose Key Attackers
Iowa State’s front line suffered a devastating blow in mid-September when senior right-side hitter Lilly Wachholz was ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 season. Wachholz sustained an undisclosed injury during the opening set of the Cyclones' high-stakes Cy-Hawk rivalry match against Iowa.[1]
Before the setback, Wachholz was the engine of the Iowa State offense, averaging 2.74 kills per set with a highly efficient .324 hitting percentage. She had already tallied 52 kills and 15 blocks across the team's first six matches.[1]
"Lilly's injury is heartbreaking, she has worked so hard over her career to become one of our best players and leaders," Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said.[1]
The Cyclones' defensive depth was compromised that same week. Defensive specialist Annalise Grant underwent season-ending knee surgery to repair a lingering issue, removing a reliable back-row presence who appeared in 19 matches during her freshman campaign.[1]
Further south, the Texas Longhorns are adjusting to life without sophomore outside hitter Abby Vander Wal. The rising star suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during a late-August tournament in Las Vegas, stripping Texas of a primary offensive weapon.[2]
Vander Wal earned Southeastern Conference All-Freshman team honors after recording 280 kills last season. Her absence shifts immediate pressure onto the Longhorns' freshman class to fill the scoring void for a team with deep postseason aspirations.[2]
In the Western Athletic Conference, Grand Canyon University is navigating its own injury crisis at the net. The Lopes were forced to play without two starting middle blockers during their early October matchups, leaning heavily on fifth-year outside hitter Starr Williams to carry the offensive load.[6]
SuperLega Surgery and a Star's Return
In Italy’s SuperLega, Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza will begin their domestic campaign without American spiker Cooper Robinson. Robinson underwent surgery on his right knee in Los Angeles in late September under the care of orthopedic specialist Dr. Carlos Uquillas.[3]
The procedure followed a heavy summer workload for Robinson, who competed with the United States National Team in the Volleyball Nations League. He earned best spiker honors at the Hubert Wagner Memorial in Poland before the knee issue forced him to the sidelines.[3]
While Piacenza awaits Robinson's recovery, rival club Itas Trentino recently celebrated a major milestone. Italian national team star Daniele Lavia returned to competitive action at the Coppa Italia, marking his first appearance since suffering a gruesome hand injury in August 2025.[4]
Lavia sustained a compound fracture and tendon damage to the fourth and fifth fingers of his right hand during a national team training session. The injury required two complex surgeries and months of meticulous rehabilitation to restore his grip and swing mechanics.[4]
"It was very nice and exciting, and my legs were shaking," Lavia said of his return to the court. "I received so much love from the crowd. The arena made a beautiful roar. It means a lot."[4]
Lavia admitted the mental toll of watching his teammates from the sidelines was immense, describing the isolation of injury. However, he noted that the slow return of finger mobility provided crucial, tangible milestones during his recovery.[4]
"Confidence came gradually, after the second surgery," Lavia noted. "Once I was certain I could come back like before, I started pushing to return as soon as possible and stronger than before."[4]
Stam Returns to the Sand
The international beach volleyball circuit is also welcoming back a familiar face this month. Dutch standout Katja Stam has officially returned to the sand after a stubborn lower back injury sidelined her for six grueling months.[5]
The injury, which began as a nagging pain during a tournament in Mexico, eventually forced Stam to miss the majority of the previous season. The extended absence caused Stam and partner Raïsa Schoon to drop to 39th in the World Rankings.[5]
"It was everything and nothing at the same time," Stam said of the initial injury. "I was mostly in intense pain. At the same time, my mind was racing: Why now? What did I do wrong?"[5]
Stam noted that the recovery process tested her patience, especially during the first month when physical movement was severely limited and painful. However, the gradual weekly improvements kept her confident that a full return to the elite level was inevitable.[5]
Stam and Schoon are now rebuilding their rhythm from the ground up. The 27-year-old blocker noted that the extended absence provided a rare opportunity to step back from a decade of continuous competition and reassess her approach.[5]
"You'll see a Katja who plays with more freedom," Stam said of her mindset moving forward. "It's not driven by pressure anymore, but by belief."[5]
