The U.S. Women's National Team survived a late-match thriller to defeat the Dominican Republic 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 27-25) on Wednesday night at the 2026 NORCECA Final Six in Zinacantepec, Mexico. The victory keeps the Americans undefeated at 3-0 in the round-robin stage of the tournament.[1][2]
After dropping a tightly contested third set, the U.S. built a 21-15 lead in the fourth, only to watch the Dominican Republic storm back to tie the frame at 23-23. The teams traded side-outs until 25-25, when consecutive clutch blocks by Oluwatoyosi Onabanjo and Ella Powell sealed the match for the United States.[1][2]
Outside hitter Caitie Baird paced the American offense with 19 points on 17 kills and two blocks. Middle blocker Onye Ofoegbu added 16 points, while Sami Francis contributed 14 points and Claire Hoffman tallied 13. "It was a great match. It was a lot of fun," Baird said following the victory.
"We knew it was going to be a battle because they are a good team. I think we just stuck to our game plan. We really had each other's backs, and whenever things weren't going our way, we talked through it and stayed together well."[1][2]
The Dominican squad, which dropped to 1-2 in the tournament, was led by Alondra Tapia's match-high 20 points, including 16 kills and three blocks. Flormarie Heredia and Yanlis Félix added 12 and 11 points, respectively, keeping the pressure on the U.S. defense throughout the two-hour battle. Defensively, American libero Elena Oglivie anchored the back row with 20 digs.[1][2][5]
The NORCECA Final Six, running through September 27, features six regional powers—Canada, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the U.S.—competing for podium spots and critical international reps. The U.S. entered the tournament as the defending champion, while the Dominican Republic holds the record with three Final Six gold medals.
While the national team battled in Mexico, the collegiate volleyball landscape saw major programs wrap up their nonconference schedules with dominant performances. In Gainesville, the No. 8 Florida Gators swept Jacksonville 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-13) on Wednesday evening to improve to 9-1 ahead of SEC play.[3]
The Gators matched a season-high with 11 service aces, fueled by a career-best four from Lily Hayes. Kamryn Chaney and Logan King led the attack with nine and seven kills, respectively, as Florida outhit the Dolphins .287 to .112. The 9-1 start marks Florida's best opening stretch since the 2023 season.[3]
Earlier in the week, the collegiate schedule featured historic milestones and conference openers. Purdue made history by sweeping Houston in the Bahamas—the first regular-season NCAA volleyball win outside the country—before sweeping SMU to claim the tournament title. Meanwhile, Eastern Michigan opened MAC play with a commanding 3-0 sweep of Central Michigan, powered by Nattie Slusher's 10 kills and a .320 hitting percentage.[4][6]
The U.S. National Team will face host Mexico on Thursday night as they look to secure a top seed for the crossover semifinals. Domestically, the focus shifts entirely to conference play, where heavyweights like Florida and Purdue will look to translate their early-season momentum into deep postseason runs.[1][3]
