Both consist of pure carbon crystallized in an isometric cubic structure, and both score a perfect 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. The Federal Trade Commission formally updated its guidelines in 2018 to recognize lab-grown stones as genuine diamonds, removing the word "natural" from the basic definition of a diamond.[4]
