That output is routed through a Home Integration System—typically installed by Ford’s partner, Sunrun—which includes an inverter and a transfer switch to safely disconnect the house from the dead grid.

Tesla approached the same engineering challenge with slightly different hardware limits. Until this week, that system operated strictly on its own. For buyers weighing the investment, the decision hinges on the existing ecosystem. A household starting from scratch will find the Ford Lightning’s standalone integration more straightforward and capable of handling heavy surges independently. A household already invested in Tesla’s solar and storage architecture will find the Cybertruck’s 123-kilowatt-hour capacity the ultimate expansion pack. The only wrong choice is assuming either vehicle can back up a home without thousands of dollars in preparatory electrical work.[1]
