When a California driver pulls into a local tire shop to replace a worn-out set of rubber, they unknowingly make a choice that will quietly drain their household budget over the next four years. The tires that come fresh from the factory are highly engineered by automakers to maximize fuel economy and electric vehicle range. But the replacements sitting on the retail rack often require significantly more energy just to roll down the highway, creating a hidden penalty for the buyer.[6]
