Switzerland Overcomes Early Shock to Defeat Slovenia 2-1 in Nations League

Switzerland absorbed a second-minute deficit to secure a 2-1 victory over Slovenia, extending their perfect Nations League record. A Dan Ndoye strike completed the first-half turnaround, giving Murat Yakin's side a commanding five-point lead in Group 1.

When Murat Yakin’s Switzerland dismantled Scotland last month, they dictated the tempo from the opening whistle and never trailed. Saturday’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Slovenia in Lucerne required a completely different mechanism: absorbing a shock second-minute deficit and methodically dismantling a low block to secure the turnaround before halftime.[1][5]

Slovenia arrived at the Thermoplan Arena missing star striker Benjamin Šeško, who withdrew from the squad earlier this week with a shin injury. Despite the absence of their primary attacking focal point, the visitors struck almost immediately when Aljoša Matko supplied Žan Vipotnik in the second minute.[2]

Vipotnik finished cleanly past Gregor Kobel to stun the home crowd and give Boštjan Cesar’s side an unexpected 1-0 advantage. It was the first time Switzerland had trailed in this Nations League cycle, testing a defensive unit that had kept consecutive clean sheets in their opening two fixtures.[5]

The Swiss response was immediate and suffocating. Rather than panicking, the hosts applied sustained territorial pressure that forced a critical error in the tenth minute, when Slovenian defender Erik Janža inadvertently turned the ball into his own net under heavy duress to level the match at 1-1.

With parity restored, Switzerland’s structured possession began to wear down Slovenia’s direct transitions. Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler dictated the rhythm from the center of the pitch, denying the visitors the ball and systematically probing the edges of the Slovenian penalty area for a second opening.[4]

The decisive breakthrough arrived in the 38th minute following another sustained attacking sequence. Nottingham Forest winger Dan Ndoye found the net with a precise strike, completing the first-half turnaround and rewarding a dominant 30-minute spell that showcased Switzerland's tactical maturity.[1]

After the break, the contest became increasingly physical as Slovenia desperately searched for an equalizer. Cesar introduced David Brekalo and Adam Gnezda Čerin to inject energy into the midfield, but the Swiss defense, anchored by a flawless performance from Manuel Akanji, refused to yield any clear-cut opportunities.[4]

Akanji earned Man of the Match honors for his role in neutralizing the visitors' late pushes, ensuring Kobel remained largely untested in the second half. The defensive stand extended Switzerland's unbeaten run in normal time to 12 games, a streak dating back to their impressive World Cup campaign.[1][5]

The victory leaves Switzerland sitting comfortably at the summit of League B Group 1 with a perfect nine points from three matches. "We want to win this Nations League group and we are demonstrating it amply on the pitch," Yakin noted, praising his squad's overall organization.[3][6]

For Slovenia, the result continues a woeful away streak that has seen them win just once in their last seven matches on the road. The absence of Šeško proved glaring in the second half, as the team struggled to hold up the ball and relieve pressure on their backline.[1][2]

Despite the setback, Cesar's side remains tied on four points with Scotland, keeping them firmly in contention for a promotion playoff spot. Switzerland, meanwhile, has established a commanding five-point cushion at the top of the table, putting automatic promotion to League A entirely within their own hands.[1][6]
