Portugal Defeats Denmark 4-2 to Maintain Perfect Nations League Record

Portugal secured a 4-2 victory over Denmark in Copenhagen, overcoming the sudden departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to keep Jorge Jesus's side at the top of Group A4.

The match was decided in the 67th minute when Vitinha rose in the penalty area to head home a cross from Bruno Fernandes. That goal restored Portugal's lead at 3-2, breaking a Danish resurgence and proving Jorge Jesus's squad could execute under pressure without their former captain.[3][5]

Until that header, the momentum at Parken Stadium had swung dangerously toward the hosts. Rasmus Højlund had just equalized for Denmark in the 53rd minute, lifting a finish over Diogo Costa and deploying Cristiano Ronaldo's trademark "Siu" celebration—a pointed gesture on the day the 41-year-old forward walked out of the Portuguese camp.[5][6]

Ronaldo's sudden departure dominated the pre-match buildup in Copenhagen. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner left the squad on Wednesday after Jesus informed him he would start on the bench for the second consecutive match, having already sat out Sunday's 2-1 victory over Norway.[1][2]

The controversy began when the veteran forward addressed his exit publicly. "Following the national team coach's press conference... I decided to leave the national team's training camp," Ronaldo wrote on social media before kickoff.[1]

On the pitch, Portugal showed no signs of distraction, opening the scoring just 13 minutes in. João Cancelo played a quick one-two with Gonçalo Ramos before dinking the ball over Danish goalkeeper Mads Hermansen to establish early control.[3][4]

Denmark responded quickly in the 23rd minute through a well-worked overload on the left wing. Joakim Mæhle cut the ball back into the box, allowing Mikkel Damsgaard to curl a precise strike into the far corner to level the match at 1-1.[3][5]

The parity lasted only two minutes before Portugal's attack clicked again. Fernandes, who finished the night with two assists, released Ramos with a perfectly weighted pass. The striker raced clear and beat Hermansen with a low finish, repaying Jesus's decision to start him up front.[3][5]

Portugal and Denmark split possession evenly at 50 percent each, but the visitors were far more clinical in the final third. Portugal registered 10 shots on target compared to Denmark's three, constantly testing Hermansen despite the hostile Copenhagen crowd.[6]

Denmark manager Brian Riemer watched his side create early opportunities, including a moment when Mæhle broke clear but delayed his pass to Adam Daghim. Those missed margins proved costly against a Portuguese side that has now lost only once in its last 13 international matches.[3][5]

After Højlund's second-half equalizer and Vitinha's decisive header, Portugal controlled the closing stages. Jesus turned to his bench, bringing on João Félix and João Neves to see out the result, though the manager himself received a yellow card for venturing out of his technical area.[3][4]

Félix sealed the victory in the 87th minute to put the result beyond doubt. Following a swift counter-attack that began deep in Portuguese territory, Diogo Dalot squared a pass to Félix, whose shot deflected off Rasmus Kristensen and into the net.[3][5]

The 4-2 victory leaves Portugal with a perfect record of nine points from three matches, sitting six points clear at the top of UEFA Nations League Group A4. Denmark remains tied on three points with Norway and Wales.[3][6]
