Greece Holds Germany to Scoreless Draw, Maintains Unbeaten Nations League Run

Greece secured a 0-0 draw against Germany in Thessaloniki, backing up last week's historic victory and keeping Jürgen Klopp's side searching for consistency.

At the 31-minute mark on Sunday night, Jonathan Burkardt put the ball in the back of the Greek net, only for a VAR review to erase the advantage. That overturned goal proved to be the closest Germany would get to breaking through at Toumba Stadium, as Greece held on for a gritty 0-0 draw in their UEFA Nations League Matchday 4 clash.[1][2]

The scoreless result in Thessaloniki backed up Greece's historic 1-0 victory over Germany just a week earlier in Augsburg. Head coach Ivan Jovanović set up his side to absorb pressure, relying on a disciplined defensive block that frustrated a German attack dominating possession but struggling to find the final, decisive pass.[3][4]

Jürgen Klopp's tenure as Germany's manager continues to yield mixed results as he attempts to rebuild the national team. Through four matches in charge, Klopp has secured only one victory, leaving his squad in third place in Group A2 with five points.[3][4]

"We got a bit unsettled around the 60-minute mark, so our movements lost some of their clarity," Klopp noted after the match.

The German manager pointed to the physical toll of playing two matches in three days, adding that while their counterpressing worked well most of the time, the lapses made things difficult against a resilient opponent.

Greece, meanwhile, remains unbeaten in the competition and sits tied atop the group with the Netherlands at eight points. Goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis anchored the defensive effort, making crucial saves against David Raum and Derry Scherhant in the first half to keep the visitors off the board and preserve the clean sheet.[1][2]

The tactical battle saw Germany press high up the pitch, but Greece effectively managed the transitions and closed down passing lanes.

"The addition of another orthodox midfielder in the second half helped us get the second ball on interceptions," Jovanović explained, praising his team's concentration against a side he called truly excellent.

Klopp attempted to inject fresh energy in the final half-hour, introducing Nick Woltemade and Said El Mala for Burkardt and Lennart Karl. Despite the fresh legs and continued territorial dominance, the German attack repeatedly stalled against a Greek defense anchored by Konstantinos Koulierakis and Konstantinos Mavropanos.[1][4]

The hosts even threatened to steal all three points late in the match. Georgios Masouras found space in the box in the 76th minute, but his header narrowly missed the top corner, leaving both sides to settle for a single point after a physically demanding 90 minutes.[2][4]

The result sets up a high-stakes November window for Group A2. Greece will travel to face the Netherlands on November 13 in a match that will likely decide the group winner, while Germany must find a way to convert possession into goals if they hope to climb out of third place and advance.[3]
