Florian Wirtz Masterclass Delivers Jürgen Klopp’s First Germany Victory

Florian Wirtz orchestrated a relentless 2-0 win at the Allianz Arena, securing Jürgen Klopp’s first victory as national team manager. The hosts suffocated Serbia with 73 percent possession and a barrage of 30 shots to reignite their UEFA Nations League campaign.

Under the floodlights at the Allianz Arena on Thursday night, the tension of a stuttering start to the Jürgen Klopp era dissolved the moment Florian Wirtz danced through the Serbian penalty area. The 23-year-old playmaker shifted his weight, bypassed a desperate challenge, and fired a low strike past Đorđe Petrović to seal a 2-0 victory.[1][2]

The 61st-minute strike capped a night of total territorial dominance for the hosts in their UEFA Nations League Group A2 clash. Germany suffocated Serbia from the opening whistle, holding 73 percent of the ball and restricting the visitors to a solitary shot on target.[1][4]

"I'm over the moon about the performance, about the way the boys performed tonight," Germany head coach Jürgen Klopp said after the match. "A top performance, period, from start to end."

The breakthrough arrived in the 39th minute following a relentless wave of German pressure. Wirtz produced brilliant footwork inside the box and struck the post, allowing Bayern Munich midfielder Tom Bischof to smash the rebound into the roof of the net on his home ground.[1][2]

Serbia, arriving in Munich after consecutive 2-1 defeats to Greece and the Netherlands, struggled to cross the halfway line. The Balkan side generated a negligible 0.02 expected goals compared to Germany's 4.05, leaving goalkeeper Jonas Urbig largely a spectator.[1][3]

"We are a team in reconstruction," Serbia head coach Veljko Paunović told reporters. "We still have a long way to go. The experience, definitely, and the level that we have to reach to play against the best teams in the world."

Klopp’s tactical adjustments proved decisive after a frustrating 1-0 loss to Greece earlier in the window. The manager shifted from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2 formation, utilizing Maximilian Mittelstädt as a constant overlapping threat down the left flank.[1][4]

Mittelstädt’s width stretched Serbia’s low block and ultimately provided the assist for Wirtz’s second-half goal. The Stuttgart defender surged forward and found Wirtz in the heart of the penalty area, dismantling the Serbian defensive structure.[1][2]

Despite the two-goal cushion, the sheer volume of German attempts suggested a much heavier defeat was possible. Petrović made several crucial saves, including a brilliant first-half stop against Serge Gnabry, to keep the scoreline respectable for the visitors.[2][3]

Klopp used the comfortable margin to test his squad depth, handing a national team debut to Krefeld native Saïd El Mala. The winger replaced Gnabry at halftime, injecting fresh pace into a German attack that registered 20 touches in the opposing penalty area to Serbia's two.[4]

Serbia attempted to respond late in the match, with substitute Mihajlo Cvetković breaking through the defensive line. However, the forward opted to stay on his feet under pressure from Malick Thiaw rather than going down for a potential penalty, and the fleeting chance slipped away.[2][5]

The victory lifts Germany to four points in Group A2, trailing Greece and the Netherlands, while Serbia remains rooted to the bottom of the table with zero points. Klopp’s revamped squad now looks ahead with renewed momentum as they build toward the 2026 World Cup cycle.[3][4]
