England Demolish Croatia 7-0 in Historic Nations League Rout

Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka each scored twice as Thomas Tuchel’s side delivered a ruthless attacking masterclass in Rijeka.

By Jackson Reed

England delivered one of the most devastating away performances in their history on Saturday, October 3, dismantling Croatia 7-0 in the UEFA Nations League. Thomas Tuchel’s side tore through the hosts with a relentless attacking display at the Stadion HNK Rijeka. The victory stands as England’s largest ever margin of victory against the Balkan nation.[2][4]

The Group A3 fixture was played in a surreal atmosphere, unfolding behind closed doors due to a UEFA stadium ban imposed on Croatia for crowd trouble in 2025. Instead of a hostile home crowd, the stands were filled with roughly 6,000 local schoolchildren and a pocket of 100 traveling England supporters.[2][7]

"We took care about fatigue," Tuchel said ahead of the match, noting the short turnaround from their previous victory. "We will try to stay true to our own playing style."[1]

That playing style proved entirely too much for Slaven Bilić’s transitional Croatian squad. The hosts have now conceded 12 goals in their opening three Nations League matches, looking a shadow of the team that reached the 2018 World Cup final.[2][7]

A Ruthless First Half

It took England just eight minutes to break the deadlock and set the tone for the evening. Jude Bellingham threaded a precise pass to Harry Kane, who controlled the ball with the outside of his right foot before curling a shot into the top left corner.[3][6]

Harry Kane opened the scoring in the eighth minute with an outside-of-the-foot strike.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the 21st minute through a fluid counter-attack. Anthony Gordon, now plying his trade at Barcelona, kept the ball alive near the left byline before finding Bellingham at the near post. The Real Madrid midfielder slid the ball home to make it 2-0.[3][5]

Gordon then turned goalscorer in the 39th minute, netting for his third consecutive international appearance. Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah whipped a superb cross to the far post, where Gordon rose to head the ball firmly into the net.[1][4]

Croatia’s best chance of the half fell to Mateo Kovačić in the 41st minute. The midfielder successfully rounded England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, only to fluff his lines and miss an open goal that could have shifted the momentum.[1][4]

England immediately punished the error, putting the game entirely out of reach just before the halftime whistle. Bellingham burst forward to the byline and cut the ball back across the box, allowing Bukayo Saka to tap in a simple finish for a 4-0 lead.[5][7]

Kane Extends National Record

The interval provided no respite for Croatia, as England resumed their onslaught immediately after the restart. In the 53rd minute, Elliot Anderson curled an inviting cross from the right flank, and Kane slid in at the back post for a classic poacher’s finish.[1][2]

The strike marked Kane’s 89th international goal in his 124th appearance for the Three Lions. The Bayern Munich striker continues to extend his national scoring record, showing no signs of slowing down under Tuchel’s management.[6][7]

Harry Kane extended his national scoring record to 89 goals in 124 appearances.

Shortly after Kane’s second goal, Croatia manager Bilić hauled off 41-year-old captain Luka Modrić in the 56th minute. The substitution felt like a changing of the guard for a Croatian side struggling to replace its golden generation.[3][4]

Bellingham Pulls the Strings

Saka grabbed his second goal of the night in the 68th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error. Croatia failed to clear their lines, allowing the ball to fall to Kane, who quickly squared it for the Arsenal winger to finish.[1][2]

Bellingham, who finished the match with a goal and three assists, orchestrated the final blow in the 87th minute. He picked out substitute Morgan Rogers, who controlled the pass with his heel and slotted the ball in from a tight angle to complete the 7-0 rout.[4][7]

The result eclipses England’s previous benchmark against Croatia, a 5-1 World Cup qualifying victory at Wembley in 2009. It also firmly answers any lingering questions about the squad's attacking cohesion heading into the winter fixtures.[1]

Nations League Stakes

The victory moves England to six points from their first three Nations League fixtures, keeping them firmly in the hunt for a top-two finish and a spot in the March 2027 quarter-finals. They remain in a tight race with group leaders Spain, who previously defeated Croatia 4-1.[3][7]

England moved to six points in Group A3, keeping pace with group leaders Spain.

England will conclude this international window by hosting Czechia at Wembley on Tuesday. Tuchel’s side will look to replicate their clinical finishing in front of a full home crowd, aiming to secure another crucial three points.[2][7]

For Croatia, the path forward looks increasingly difficult in League A. Bilić must find a way to shore up a leaking defense before his side faces Spain again in their next fixture, hoping to avoid another heavy defeat.[2][3]
