On October 24, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un arrived in the Chinese border city of Dandong via the New Yalu River Bridge. The unannounced trip, which concluded on Saturday, marked his first known travel abroad and first visit to China in over a year. The visit coincided with the anniversary of Chinese troops entering the 1950–1953 Korean War.
During the brief trip, Kim inaugurated the newly opened three-kilometer border crossing. The diplomatic maneuver highlights Pyongyang's effort to reinforce its economic ties with Beijing and balance its deepening military alliance with Russia.
How the story developed
The New Yalu River Bridge, a four-lane crossing connecting Dandong and Sinuiju, North Korea, sat unused for 12 years due to North Korean delays. The infrastructure project was designed to relieve the aging 1930s Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, which has historically handled 70 percent of official bilateral trade between the two nations.
On the Thursday preceding October 16, commercial trucks began crossing the New Yalu River Bridge, formally ending the decade-long infrastructure stalemate. The activation of the bridge provides Pyongyang with a massive logistical artery for industrial and agricultural trade.
Following the opening, Chinese traders temporarily rushed cargo over the old Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge. This movement was an effort to avoid the steep customs tolls expected on the new route.
Western monitors have warned that the expanded four-lane capacity of the new bridge will make it significantly harder to inspect cargo for violations of United Nations sanctions.
