The 25-year drought for English football has officially ended on home soil. Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane captured the 2026 Men's Ballon d'Or during a ceremony at the London Palladium, cementing his status as the world's premier player after a prolific calendar year.[1][2]

Kane becomes the first Englishman to lift the golden ball since Michael Owen achieved the feat in 2001. The recognition follows a dominant stretch in Germany and on the international stage, where his goalscoring output separated him from a crowded field of European contenders that included Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal.[1][6]

During the 2025/26 campaign, the 33-year-old forward recorded an astonishing 73 goals in 65 appearances across all competitions. That tally included 61 goals for Bayern Munich and 12 strikes for the England national team, making him Europe's undisputed top scorer.[4][6]

His club form propelled Bayern Munich to a domestic treble, securing the Bundesliga title, the DFB-Pokal, and the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. On the international stage, Kane's leadership and finishing helped England secure a third-place finish at the 2026 FIFA World Cup over the summer.[4][6]

In addition to the main prize, Kane also secured the Gerd Müller Trophy, given to the best men's striker of the year. The London ceremony marked the first time the 70-year-old event was held outside of Paris, a venue shift designed as a tribute to inaugural 1956 winner Sir Stanley Matthews.[4][6]

England head coach Thomas Tuchel praised his captain's historic milestone following the announcement. "To become the first Englishman to win this huge honour in 25 years makes it extra special and we are lucky to have you as our leader," Tuchel said.[4]

"I know you will enjoy this moment with your loved ones and then get back to doing what you do best – scoring goals and winning football matches," Tuchel added, highlighting the work ethic that has defined Kane's career.[4]

The victory caps a decade of consistent scoring at the highest level for the former Tottenham Hotspur academy graduate. Before this year's triumph, the striker had established himself as one of Europe's most reliable finishers without securing the ultimate individual prize.[5][6]

The London Palladium hosted the 70th edition of the prestigious awards.

Kane now joins an exclusive list of English football royalty. He is only the fifth Englishman to claim the award, following Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton in 1966, Kevin Keegan in 1978 and 1979, and Owen.[4]

He also ends a long wait for his current club, becoming the first Bayern Munich player to win the award since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981. The achievement places Kane alongside club legends like Gerd Müller and Franz Beckenbauer in the Bavarian side's history books.[6]

While Kane took the top honor, Barcelona's teenage sensation Yamal did not leave empty-handed. The Spanish winger secured the Kopa Trophy for the best player under the age of 21, marking his third consecutive win in the category, as several Premier League stars also learned their final rankings in the top 30.[3][6]

The Munich delegation arrived in force to support their star striker in his home city. Club president Herbert Hainer, chief executive Christoph Dreesen, and teammate Michael Olise were all in attendance at the Palladium to witness the historic coronation.[6]
