Rest of India Dismantles Jammu & Kashmir to Capture 2026 Irani Cup

Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep shared nine wickets in a devastating fourth-innings spell to bowl out Jammu & Kashmir for 111. The 167-run victory secured the Irani Cup for Rest of India after Ravichandran Smaran's rescue centuries.

The delivery moved just enough off the Srinagar pitch to beat the defence and shatter the middle stump. When Rest of India pacer Mukesh Kumar castled Jammu & Kashmir captain Paras Dogra just before lunch on Sunday, the momentum of the Irani Cup violently shifted.[1][2]

Rest of India ultimately secured a 167-run victory at the Sher-e-Kashmir Stadium, dismantling the reigning Ranji Trophy champions on the fourth day. The win required a massive fourth-innings turnaround after the hosts had dominated the early stages of the five-day contest.[4]

Jammu & Kashmir entered the final innings needing 279 to win, but the mathematics of the Irani Cup meant they only had to survive. Having secured a 41-run first-innings lead by bowling Rest of India out for 237, a draw would have been enough to hand J&K the trophy.[1][4]

The chase began perfectly for the home side in front of their local supporters. Openers Shubham Khajuria and Qamran Iqbal navigated the new ball with confidence, putting together a fluent 54-run stand that left Rest of India searching for answers.[1]

Akash Deep provided the initial breakthrough, trapping Iqbal leg-before-wicket for 32. That opening allowed Mukesh to inflict a devastating double-blow in the 15th over, removing Shubham Pundir and Dogra off successive deliveries to stun the top order.[2]

Rest of India overcame a first-innings deficit to secure a commanding victory on day four.

The hosts went into the lunch break at 89 for three, with Khajuria unbeaten on 36 and Abdul Samad on six. The match still hung in the balance, but the resumption brought a manic, match-ending collapse that decided the title.[1]

Akash struck on the very first ball after the interval, dismissing Khajuria. From there, the Jammu & Kashmir batting order completely disintegrated, losing their final six wickets for a mere 22 runs across nine brutal overs of pace bowling.[2][4]

Mukesh finished with exceptional figures of six for 33 in 10.4 overs, marking his 11th five-wicket haul in first-class cricket. Akash supported him brilliantly from the other end, taking three for 25 in a relentless display of fast bowling.[2][5]

The two pacers, who share a long history rising through the ranks from Bihar to Bengal, savoured the shared success. Their combined nine-wicket haul in the fourth innings was the defining sequence of the final, tearing through a lineup that had looked comfortable hours earlier.[3][4]

"Whatever happens for us, it happens together. I don't know what is written in our destiny," Akash said of their bowling partnership.[3]

"The bodies are different, but our fate is the same. That's why it is difficult to explain. We ourselves don't know why everything happens alike for us."[3]

Fast bowlers Akash Deep and Mukesh Kumar delivered a devastating spell after lunch to dismantle the hosts.

The fast bowlers' heroics were only made possible by Ravichandran Smaran, who single-handedly kept Rest of India in the match. The left-hander produced a magnificent Player of the Match performance across both innings to rescue a faltering batting card.[2][5]

After top-scoring with 68 in the first innings, Smaran arrived at the crease with his team in deep trouble during the second. He struck a masterful 135 off 153 balls, pushing the total to 319 despite Umar Nazir, Sunil Kumar, and Sahil Lotra taking three wickets each for J&K.[2]

Akash's workload and rhythm—taking six wickets across 23.3 overs in the match—offered a significant boost for the national setup. The 29-year-old consistently topped 140 km/h, proving his fitness following a seven-month injury layoff.[3]

"My body needed a rest. God gave it to me in the form of an injury and I utilised it well," Akash noted. "I am not putting in a lot of effort to bowl 140kmph-plus. This is the result of 6-7 months of training."[3]

For Jammu & Kashmir, the defeat was a bitter end to a historic season that saw them capture their maiden Ranji Trophy in February 2026. Rest of India, meanwhile, celebrated a hard-fought triumph built on middle-order resilience and lethal seam bowling.[4]
