Portugal is the first team to book a ticket to the 2027 UEFA Nations League quarterfinals, surviving a second-half scare and a late red card to put away Norway 2-1 on Sunday night in Porto. The victory keeps Jorge Jesus’s squad perfect in their 2026 campaign, securing 12 points from four matches.[1][2]
The result definitively proves Portugal can execute their high-pressing system without Cristiano Ronaldo, who abruptly left the national camp last week after a dispute over his playing time. In his absence, a fluid attacking trident of Gonçalo Ramos, Rafael Leão, and João Félix dictated the tempo at the Estádio do Dragão.[4]
Despite Portugal's early control, Norway struck first against the run of play in the 36th minute. Martin Ødegaard floated a precise pass toward the edge of the penalty area, where Brentford defender Kristoffer Ajer met the bouncing ball with a stunning half-volley that dipped into the top corner.[2][4]
The visitors' advantage lasted exactly two minutes before João Cancelo delivered an immediate, emphatic response. Surging forward from the backline, the defender met a cutback from Nuno Mendes and rifled a 20-yard volley past Norwegian goalkeeper Egil Selvik to level the match at 1-1.[2][5]
"I think the first half was completely even, and it's a bit disappointing that we conceded from a long throw-in just before half-time, because the first half was rock solid," Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken told TV2 following the defeat.[3]
The tactical battle intensified after the break as Norway absorbed heavy pressure while hunting for counter-attacks through Erling Haaland. However, the Manchester City striker endured a frustrating evening, firing across the face of the goal on his only real chance before being substituted for Jørgen Strand Larsen in the 67th minute.[2]
Portugal's relentless possession finally broke the deadlock in the 79th minute following a rapid sequence inside the Norwegian box. Vitinha chipped a delicate pass to the far post for Félix, who headed the ball across the face of the goal for Ramos to bundle home from close range.[1][2]
"The result, 2-1 against Norway, is important," Jesus said during his post-match press conference. "It was not an easy game, but we controlled large parts of it, created good chances and showed character when Norway made things difficult for us."[1]
The hosts were forced to navigate a chaotic final stretch with ten men after Francisco Conceição was dismissed in the 86th minute. The winger received a yellow card for dissent following an unsuccessful penalty appeal, responded by giving the referee a sarcastic thumbs-up, and was immediately shown a second yellow.[2][4]
Norway pushed for a late equalizer but could not penetrate Portugal's reorganized defensive block, which was marshaled effectively by Rúben Dias. The defeat leaves Solbakken's side stranded on four points in Group A4, requiring victories in their final two matches to keep their fading knockout-stage hopes alive.[1][3]
"Portugal deserved the win; they played better than us today," Norwegian full-back Fredrik Aursnes admitted to Sport TV. "They controlled the game well; we played well in the first half, but in the second, we couldn't get into their half and create chances."[3]
