EuroLeague Power Rankings: Panathinaikos and Fenerbahce Dominate as Real Madrid Stumbles

Panathinaikos and Fenerbahce have surged to the top of the EuroLeague standings with perfect starts, while Real Madrid faces a historic 0-3 crisis.

The 2026-27 EuroLeague season is only three rounds deep, but the continental hierarchy is already fracturing. Panathinaikos and Fenerbahce look utterly untouchable at the summit, while Real Madrid is spiraling through the worst start in its storied 68-year history. The early form guide is ruthless.[1][3]

The double-week gauntlet has thinned the herd at the top of the standings. Only four teams remain unbeaten, with Panathinaikos, Fenerbahce, Valencia, and Partizan separating themselves from the chaos of the middle table. For the chasing pack, the margin for error has already evaporated.[1]

Panathinaikos currently holds the undisputed crown in our October power rankings. The Greens have dominated their opening slate, building a staggering +30.9 net rating on the back of a historically efficient offense. They are currently posting a 128.6 offensive rating, rendering opposing defenses helpless.[2]

The Unbeaten Juggernauts

In their recent double-week sweep, Panathinaikos dismantled ASVEL and Maccabi Tel Aviv with ruthless precision. Guerschon Yabusele led the charge with 17 points against Maccabi, while the return of Nigel Hayes-Davis adds terrifying depth to a roster that was already winning comfortably.[1]

Early metrics highlight the massive gap between the league's unbeaten leaders and struggling traditional powers.

Fenerbahce sits right on their heels at number two, matching the 3-0 start with a suffocating +22.0 net rating. Their 100-76 demolition of Bayern Munich showcased a balanced, high-octane attack that currently ranks second in the league in overall efficiency.[1][2]

The Madrid Crisis

On the opposite end of the spectrum, panic is setting in at the WiZink Center. Real Madrid has collapsed to an unprecedented 0-3 record following a 102-98 shootout loss to Hapoel Tel Aviv. It marks the worst continental start in the club's history.[3][4]

The defensive breakdowns have been staggering for Pedro Martínez's squad. Against Hapoel, Los Blancos surrendered 63 points in the first half alone. That marks the second-most points they have ever conceded before halftime in a EuroLeague fixture, exposing a chronic vulnerability away from home.[3][4]

"In the first two games, our team competed until the end, but their opponents managed to take the win in the closing minutes," the club noted in its official match preview, hoping for a turnaround in Sofia that never materialized.[6]

The historic slump overshadowed a brilliant individual effort from Theo Maledon. The Real Madrid guard erupted for 26 points, five rebounds, and seven assists, setting a career-high Performance Index Rating of 40. Despite his heroics, the team remains anchored to the bottom of the standings.[3]

The Chasing Pack

While the titans grab the headlines, Valencia and Partizan have quietly assembled perfect 3-0 records. Valencia boasts a +17.2 net rating, relying on a blistering pace that overwhelmed Baskonia 111-88. Partizan's gritty defensive identity has them grinding out crucial early victories.[1][2]

Olympiacos experienced the volatility of the EuroLeague firsthand during the double-week. After a narrow two-point victory in Kaunas, they suffered a heartbreaking loss in Bologna when Marcus Carr hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer. Dropping to 2-1 shrinks their margin for error early in the campaign.[1]

Dubai Basketball has immediately disrupted the established order. Their 94-87 victory over Barcelona showcased a fearless offensive approach, proving the expansion franchise can trade blows with European royalty. They currently sit at 2-1, forcing traditional powers to take notice.[1]

The middle of the table remains a mess of one-possession finishes and late comebacks. Teams like Bayern Munich and Baskonia are struggling to find consistency, proving that the grueling 38-round schedule punishes any roster lacking elite depth.[1]

EuroLeague shareholder clubs met in Italy to reject an immediate NBA merger, opting instead for internal expansion.

Off-Court Shockwaves

The on-court drama is unfolding against a backdrop of massive institutional shifts. On October 6, EuroLeague shareholder clubs officially rejected a proposal to join the highly anticipated "NBA Europe" project. The decision leaves the door open for future talks but halts any immediate merger.[5]

Representatives from the 13 permanent shareholder clubs met near Lake Como to debate the league's future. Instead of the NBA partnership, they are evaluating an internal 10-year strategic plan that would expand the current 20-team EuroLeague format to 24 franchises.[5]

"Although the clubs rejected the current proposal, talks could continue," reported Reuters, noting that any collaboration between the EuroLeague and the NBA remains unlikely before 2028 due to the logistical hurdles of organizing a new competition.[5]

For now, the focus remains strictly on the hardwood. With Panathinaikos and Fenerbahce setting a blistering pace, the rest of the continent is already playing catch-up. The next round of fixtures will test whether the early anomalies solidify into permanent realities.[1]
