Hubert Hurkacz Upsets Novak Djokovic in Straight Sets at Shanghai Masters

Hubert Hurkacz secured his first career victory over Novak Djokovic, delivering a flawless serving performance to advance to the third round. The Polish star's win marks a rapid recovery from an injury that forced his retirement just days earlier.

Hubert Hurkacz delivered a flawless serving performance on Friday to upset Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3 in the second round of the Rolex Shanghai Masters. The 29-year-old Polish star needed just 87 minutes to dismantle the four-time tournament champion, securing his first career victory over the Serbian legend in nine attempts.[1][3]

The straight-sets triumph arrived less than a week after a physical setback threatened to derail Hurkacz's Asian swing. On October 4, an adductor injury forced him to retire during his China Open semifinal. Yet, returning to the fast hard courts of Shanghai, he showed no lingering signs of physical compromise.[2]

For Djokovic, the early exit represented a sharp physical comedown following a grueling stretch. The 39-year-old arrived in Shanghai fresh off capturing his 102nd career ATP title at the China Open on Tuesday. Playing his sixth match in ten days, the 24-time Grand Slam champion appeared visibly fatigued throughout Friday's contest.[1][3]

"I wasn't close to what I was playing in Beijing. I'm slightly more tired, not fresh," Djokovic told reporters following the match. "If you lose your serve, it is enough to lose the match, once per set, and that is what happened. It is very difficult to return his serve."[1][4]

Hurkacz dictated the tempo from the baseline, relying heavily on a dominant first serve that left Djokovic scrambling. The Polish former world number six fired 13 aces and won 82 percent of his first-serve points, while facing only two break points across the entire one-hour and 27-minute contest.[4]

Hurkacz dominated on serve, firing 13 aces and winning 82 percent of his first-serve points.

"It was a challenging match, which always it's a big fight with Novak," Hurkacz noted during his press conference. "I was pleased with how I performed, how I served aggressive in important moments." He added that previous experience helped him stay focused after securing the break.[3][4]

Joining Elite Company

With the victory, Hurkacz etched his name into a highly exclusive chapter of tennis history. He became only the 31st player on the ATP Tour to record career wins over all three members of the sport's legendary modern trio: Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer.[4]

Even more remarkably, Hurkacz is now just the fourth man to defeat each of those icons on their most successful respective surfaces. He joins Andy Murray, Alexander Zverev, and Dominic Thiem as the only players to beat Nadal on clay, Federer on grass, and Djokovic on a hard court.

The pivotal moment of the opening set arrived in the tenth game. With Djokovic serving at 4-5, Hurkacz pounced on a second serve, hammering an inside-out forehand return winner to clinch the set 6-4. It marked the first time in 12 appearances that Djokovic dropped his opening set in Shanghai.[2][4]

Hurkacz carried that momentum immediately into the second set, securing a crucial break in the fourth game when Djokovic double-faulted into the net. The Polish star backed up the break with another ace to take a 4-1 lead, ultimately serving out the match at 5-3 to extend his Shanghai winning streak.[2][4]

Zverev and Shelton Advance

While Djokovic stumbled, other top contenders navigated their opening tests on Friday. Top-seeded Alexander Zverev survived a late scare to defeat Chinese wildcard Wu Yibing 6-4, 7-6(4). The German world number two slipped and grabbed his left ankle late in the second set, briefly raising concerns before recovering.[5]

"Credit to him, he was playing amazing tennis," Zverev told the crowd regarding Wu's powerful baseline performance. "He hits every ball as hard as he can." The German credited his own reliable serve for helping him navigate the tricky second-set tiebreak.

Zverev's victory keeps him firmly in contention to claim the year-end world number one ranking. With Jannik Sinner having recently announced the end of his 2026 season due to a knee injury, a deep run in Shanghai would position Zverev to overtake the top spot before the ATP Finals.[5]

Meanwhile, American third seed Ben Shelton celebrated his 24th birthday by edging Germany's Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 7-6(6) in a gritty two-hour battle. Shelton overcame five double faults to secure the straight-sets win, advancing to face French prospect Arthur Gea in the third round.[5]

The day was not without additional surprises, as two seeded players suffered unexpected early exits. Japanese qualifier Rei Sakamoto, ranked 137th in the world, stunned 23rd-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-4. Elsewhere, 38-year-old French veteran Adrian Mannarino upset sixth-seeded Italian Flavio Cobolli 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.[5]

For Hurkacz, the path forward in Shanghai presents a significant opportunity to salvage an injury-interrupted autumn. He advances to the third round to face Chinese wildcard Yi Zhou, who outlasted 24th-seeded Italian Lorenzo Musetti in a grueling two-and-a-half-hour marathon earlier on Friday.[3]

Djokovic will now return to Europe to rest and recalibrate ahead of the indoor hard-court season. The Serbian star indicated his focus shifts to the Paris Masters in early November, where he will need a strong performance to secure enough points to qualify for the season-ending ATP Finals.[1]
