Global Baseball Injury Report: Braves Lose Key Starters Ahead of NLDS as KBO's Samsung Lions Face Playoff Setback
The Atlanta Braves will enter the National League Division Series without starters Martín Pérez and Bryce Elder, severely straining their rotation. Meanwhile, the KBO's Samsung Lions suffered a major blow as batting leader Koo Ja-wook sustained a rare hamstring tendon injury just weeks before the postseason.

The grueling marathon of a 162-game season is collecting its final toll just as the October lights turn on. Across the globe, championship contenders are suddenly scrambling to patch massive holes in their rosters. The Atlanta Braves and the KBO's Samsung Lions are both facing devastating late-season injuries that could fundamentally alter their postseason trajectories.[1][2]
In Major League Baseball, the Atlanta Braves are limping into their National League Division Series matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers. A rotation that was supposed to anchor a deep October run is now severely depleted. The club officially ruled out starters Martín Pérez and Bryce Elder for the series on Thursday.[1]
Pérez was placed on the 15-day injured list with low back inflammation, removing a crucial veteran presence from the staff. Elder joined him on the shelf with a right knee injury, wiping out another reliable innings-eater. The timing could not be worse for a team that just survived a grueling Wild Card Series.[1][5]
"There's a chance we're going to have to pitch a lot of innings out of our bullpen, especially the first couple games," Braves manager Walt Weiss told reporters on Friday. The skipper did not hide the severity of the situation facing his pitching staff.[1]
Scrambling for innings
"We'll have to add some arms to the roster. My world is spinning right now," Weiss added. The manager openly acknowledged the chaotic scramble to finalize a pitching strategy against a 100-win Dodgers lineup.[1]
The situation is compounded by the heavy workload placed on ace Chris Sale. The veteran left-hander threw 95 pitches on short rest to secure the final four outs of the Wild Card clincher on Thursday night. His availability for a potential Game 2 start in Los Angeles remains highly uncertain.[1]
"A lot of it's going to depend on how Chris feels," Weiss explained regarding his ace. "Certainly don't want to jeopardize him and his health." The medical staff will monitor his recovery closely before committing to a weekend start.[1]
Adding to the mounting anxiety in Atlanta, right-hander Reynaldo López was also placed on the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation. With three starters down and their ace recovering from an emergency relief appearance, the Braves will be forced to rely heavily on untested bullpen arms.[5][6]
The Dodgers, meanwhile, have enjoyed five days of rest after securing a first-round bye with their 100-win season. Los Angeles will send Cy Young favorite Tarik Skubal to the mound for Game 1, presenting a massive challenge for a Braves lineup that must now carry the weight of a fractured pitching staff.[7]
Halfway across the world, the injury bug is wreaking havoc on the Korean Baseball Organization's regular-season climax. The Samsung Lions, locked in a fierce battle with the KT Wiz for the league championship, just lost their most dangerous offensive weapon. Star outfielder and KBO batting leader Koo Ja-wook is sidelined indefinitely.[2][4]
KBO pennant race shaken
Koo collapsed while clutching his left hamstring after a routine base-running play against the Hanwha Eagles on September 30. Subsequent medical imaging revealed a highly unusual injury: damage to the left hamstring tendon area, specifically where the tendon attaches to the hip.[2][4]
"It's an injury I've never seen before," Samsung Lions manager Park Jin-man told reporters ahead of a weekend clash in Daegu. The skipper admitted the diagnosis caught the entire clubhouse off guard, leaving them scrambling for an offensive replacement.[2]
"Usually, players injure their muscles, but this is the first time I've experienced a tendon injury in this area," Park explained. "It should be viewed as the tendon having detached from where it's attached to the hip."[2]
The 33-year-old slugger will undergo two weeks of treatment before the medical staff conducts a follow-up MRI. Only then will the club know if their franchise cornerstone can return for the postseason. In the meantime, Lee Jae-hyeon will slide into the crucial number three spot in the batting order.[2][4]
The Lotte Giants are dealing with their own medical crisis as they navigate a critical weekend series against the first-place KT Wiz. The club was hit with a double blow this week, losing both their foreign ace and their starting shortstop in a matter of days.[3]
Lotte suffers double blow
Pitcher Elvin Rodriguez abruptly left the mound after throwing 3⅓ scoreless innings against the Kiwoom Heroes on September 30. Medical tests diagnosed the right-hander with inflammation in his right ulnar nerve. The injury requires a strict two-week rehabilitation period, officially ending his 2026 campaign.[3]
"Rodriguez is out for the season. We are considering Kim Han-gyul and Kim Tae-gyun as potential replacements for the remaining starts," Lotte manager Kim Tae-hyung confirmed to the media. The rookie Kim Han-gyul is expected to take the ball first.[3]
The Giants' infield defense also took a hit when shortstop Jeon Min-jae sustained a severe right elbow bruise while sliding into home plate. He was scratched from the starting lineup after experiencing significant discomfort while attempting to throw during pre-game warmups.[3]
As the calendar flips deeper into October, survival is no longer just about executing on the field. For managers in both MLB and the KBO, the ultimate test will be navigating these devastating roster losses, managing bullpen fatigue, and finding unexpected heroes to fill the void when the lights are brightest.
