Ask almost any market observer how quantitative tightening works, and they will give you a simple, intuitive answer: it is just quantitative easing in reverse. If QE was pumping water into the financial bathtub to stimulate the economy, QT is simply pulling the plug to drain that excess liquidity out. It is a comforting metaphor that suggests central banks have precise, symmetrical control over the financial system's plumbing. It is also entirely wrong.
