Why this matters

Securing an early Olympic qualification spot relieves massive pressure for the next two years of the Beach Pro Tour, allowing the winning federations to focus entirely on LA28 preparation rather than chasing ranking points.

The European beach volleyball elite have descended upon the idyllic village of Stare Jabłonki, Poland, for the CEV EuroBeachVolley 2026. As the tournament enters its championship weekend, the stakes extend far beyond continental glory and a share of the €300,000 prize pool.[2][3]

For the first time in the current international cycle, an automatic qualification berth for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games is on the line. The winning National Olympic Committee in both the men's and women's brackets will secure a direct ticket to LA28, fundamentally altering the strategic landscape of the sport.[1][6]

Securing a spot now relieves immense pressure, allowing the victorious federations to focus their next two years entirely on Olympic preparation rather than chasing ranking points across the grueling Beach Pro Tour. For the 32 men's and 32 women's duos in the main draw, the path to California runs straight through the Polish sand.[1][3]

The stakes are higher than ever at this year's European Championship.

The men's race has been headlined by the surging Swedish prodigies, Elmer Andersson and Jacob Hölting Nilsson. Fresh off seizing the World No. 1 ranking, the duo cruised through their early pool play matches, demonstrating the relentless offensive system that has made them the team to beat globally.[4]

However, the path to the podium is crowded with seasoned veterans. Norwegian superstars Anders Mol and Christian Sørum, the defending champions chasing a record-extending sixth European title, remain formidable contenders as they advanced into the weekend's knockout rounds.[2]

However, the path to the podium is crowded with seasoned veterans.

Dutch veteran Alexander Brouwer is also experiencing a poignant homecoming. Thirteen years after winning the 2013 World Championship on this exact beach, Brouwer and his current partner Stefan Boermans have advanced to the Round of 16, riding a wave of nostalgia and sharp tactical play in front of the Polish fans.[7]

Stare Jabłonki has transformed into a 5,000-seat arena for the continental championship.

In the women's division, Latvia's Tina Graudina and Anastasija Samoilova are the undisputed frontrunners. The reigning world champions and two-time European gold medalists recently reclaimed the World No. 2 ranking and marched through the group stage without dropping a single set.[6]

They face stiff competition from a deep field of challengers, including 26 teams supported by the FIVB Volleyball Empowerment Programme. Germany's Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann, along with Swiss Olympic medalists Nina Brunner and Tanja Huberli, are well-positioned for a deep weekend run as the bracket narrows.[6]

The tournament's intensity is amplified by recent updates to the FIVB World Ranking system. The new rules, which allow overlapping events to be included in the ranking calculations, have injected fresh urgency into the continental championships, ensuring every match carries significant weight for teams outside the automatic LA28 spot.[5]

Recent ranking updates have tightened the race among Europe's elite duos.

The backdrop for this high-stakes competition is a vibrant "lifestyle festival" atmosphere. Stare Jabłonki, nestled in the Warmia-Mazury region, has transformed its lakeside beach into a 5,000-seat arena, supported by an enthusiastic army of local volunteers.[3]

As the knockout rounds narrow the field, the Polish crowds have been treated to world-class athleticism and dramatic three-set thrillers. The energy on the Central Court reflects the country's deep-rooted passion for volleyball, providing a fitting stage for the sport's highest levels.[2][3]

Sunday's finals will not only crown the kings and queens of European beach volleyball but will also officially open the gates to Los Angeles. For the two teams left standing, the grueling road to LA28 will suddenly look a lot clearer.[1]

What we don’t know

  • Which two National Olympic Committees will ultimately claim the automatic LA28 berths on Sunday.
  • How the intense pressure of early Olympic qualification will affect the performance of the heavy favorites in the final rounds.
