The short answer

  • Rafael Devers returns to Fenway Park for the first time since his June 2025 trade.
  • Red Sox starter Sonny Gray enters the game with a 15-3 record and a 2.65 ERA.
  • Giants starter Logan Webb boasts a 3.50 ERA and has allowed just two runs in August.
  • Boston is fighting for an AL playoff spot, while San Francisco sits 20 games under .500.

Friday night under the lights at Fenway Park brings a compelling interleague clash as the Boston Red Sox host the San Francisco Giants. The matchup presents a stark contrast in trajectories: the Red Sox (68-59) are fighting tooth and nail for an American League playoff spot, while the Giants (52-75) are limping through a lost season.[1][2]

But the standings are secondary to the emotional main event: the return of Rafael Devers to Boston. Traded to San Francisco in a blockbuster June 2025 deal, the slugger steps back into the Fenway batter's box for the first time as a visitor.[3]

Devers' departure from the Red Sox was notably sour, stemming from a positional dispute after the team signed Alex Bregman. Devers refused to move from third base to first base or designated hitter, prompting the trade. Ironically, he has played every game for the Giants at those exact slots in 2026.[3]

Despite the messy exit, Devers remains beloved by the Fenway faithful for his role in the 2018 World Series championship, his three All-Star appearances, and his two Silver Slugger awards. 'I feel very happy going back over there,' Devers told reporters this week. 'I love the fans. ... I'm not concerned about the reception. I just know that they were very good to me.'[3]

Friday night's pitching matchup features two of the league's most reliable arms.

He enters the series swinging a hot bat. Devers boasts 25 home runs on the season and will return to Boston having hit safely in five of his past six games. Alongside Casey Schmitt and Jung Hoo Lee, Devers has been a rare bright spot in an otherwise dismal campaign for San Francisco.[2][3]

Manager Tony Vitello's Giants squad sits 20 games under .500 and trails the division-leading Dodgers by a massive 22-game margin. The Giants have dropped eight consecutive road series, most recently falling 5-2 to the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday afternoon.[3][4]

Taking the mound for San Francisco on Friday is veteran right-hander Logan Webb (8-7, 3.50 ERA). Webb, the longest-tenured Giant, survived the trade deadline fire sale and remains the anchor of a rotation in transition.[2][4]

Taking the mound for San Francisco on Friday is veteran right-hander Logan Webb (8-7, 3.50 ERA).

Webb has been superb in August, allowing just two runs over 20 innings. In his last outing against the Rockies, Webb showcased his elite adaptability, striking out seven over six innings to secure a strong quality start and build momentum toward the 2027 campaign.[3][4]

Rafael Devers returns to Fenway Park for the first time since his June 2025 trade to San Francisco.

Opposing Webb is Boston's de facto ace, Sonny Gray (15-3, 2.65 ERA). At 36 years old, Gray is putting together a Cy Young-caliber campaign that few saw coming. After Garrett Crochet was sidelined with a lat injury earlier this year, Gray stepped up to stabilize the rotation and lead the staff.[5][6]

Gray recently made history, becoming the fastest Red Sox pitcher to reach 15 wins in a season since Pedro Martinez in 1998. He achieved the milestone last Saturday, tossing seven shutout innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates while scattering just six hits.[5][6]

'When you lose Garrett, obviously going into the season as the ace of the staff, and what Sonny has done as far as leading our rotation, you cannot understate how important that's been,' interim manager Chad Tracy noted after Gray's 15th win.[6]

Gray's dominance has been essential for a Boston team that has struggled to score runs consistently of late. The Red Sox rank third in the league in ERA (3.52), largely thanks to Gray's consistency, but the offense has been streaky.[2][6]

The Red Sox are fighting to secure their position in the tight American League playoff race.

Offensively, the Red Sox are paced by Ceddanne Rafaela, who leads the team with 137 hits, and the potent duo of Wilyer Abreu and Willson Contreras, who have combined for 142 RBIs. Abreu provided the sole offensive spark in Gray's recent win, blasting his 22nd home run of the season.[2][6]

The stakes for Friday's series opener could not be more different for the two dugouts. For Boston, every game is critical in the tight AL Wild Card race. A win behind their ace would provide a crucial boost before they face the Marlins and Yankees in the coming weeks.[2]

For the Giants, the series is about pride, finishing strong, and supporting Webb as he builds momentum toward 2027. And for Devers, it's a chance to remind Boston exactly what they traded away, under the bright lights of the ballpark he once called home.[3][4]
