The matchup is set. The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers and the Six Nations Chiefs will face off in the 2026 Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) Finals, renewing one of the most storied rivalries in Canadian box lacrosse. The best-of-seven championship series kicks off on August 18 at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena, with the winner advancing to compete for the national Mann Cup.[1][2]

Peterborough punched their ticket to the finals with a decisive 14-8 victory over the Oakville Rock on Tuesday night at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. The win secured a 3-1 series victory in the best-of-five semifinal, showcasing the Lakers' offensive depth and late-game execution in front of their home crowd.[2][3]

The clinching game was a back-and-forth affair early on, with Peterborough holding a narrow 5-4 lead after the first period despite being outshot 21-13. The Lakers built a 9-7 advantage by the end of the second period before exploding for five goals in the final frame to put the game out of reach.[1][3]

Ryan Lanchbury orchestrated the Peterborough offense with a spectacular 11-point performance, tallying two goals and nine assists. Rob Hellyer was equally lethal, finding the back of the net four times and adding three assists, while Thomas Hoggarth contributed two goals and two assists to the offensive onslaught.[2][3]

On the defensive end, Lakers goaltender Drew Hutchison delivered a stellar performance, turning aside 48 of the 56 shots he faced to earn the victory. Defender Alex Pace also made his mark, scoring his first goal of the season after collecting a rebound and avoiding the crease to extend the third-period surge.[2][3]

Awaiting the Lakers are the defending Mann Cup champion Six Nations Chiefs, who enjoyed a more direct path to the finals. The Chiefs completed a dominant 3-0 sweep of the Cobourg Kodiaks in their semifinal series, capped by an 8-5 victory in Game 3 where Dhane Smith struck for five goals.[1][4]

The upcoming finals represent the 11th time Peterborough and Six Nations have clashed for the MSL championship since their first meeting in 2012. The two heavyweights have split their previous 10 series evenly, with five championships apiece, cementing their status as the defining franchises of the modern MSL era.[2][5]

The Lakers and Chiefs have split their previous 10 finals meetings evenly.

The Chiefs are making their sixth consecutive appearance in the MSL Finals and are hunting for their fourth straight league championship. Meanwhile, the Lakers have been a near-constant presence in the title picture, appearing in every final since 2014 and reaching 20 finals since 2004.[2]

Following the series opener at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena, the series will shift to the Peterborough Memorial Centre for Game 2 on August 20. The grueling schedule will test the depth and endurance of both rosters as they battle for provincial supremacy and the right to host the Western Lacrosse Association champions in September.[1][2]
