Wout van Aert has emphatically announced his return to the professional peloton, capturing the overall title at the 2026 Tour of Denmark just weeks after a frightening injury threatened to derail his season. The Visma-Lease a Bike star sealed the general classification victory on Sunday following a dominant week of racing in Scandinavia.[1][2]

The triumph marks a profound turnaround for the Belgian rider, whose summer had previously been defined by a medical scare. In early June, Van Aert suffered a training crash just prior to the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. What initially appeared to be a standard road rash on his elbow quickly escalated into a severe infection.[5][6]

The wound worsened despite a course of antibiotics, eventually requiring surgical intervention to clean the area and prevent the onset of sepsis. The prolonged recovery forced Van Aert to withdraw from the Tour de France for the first time since his 2019 debut, sidelining one of the sport's most versatile and dynamic figures during its biggest event.[5]

Instead of racing across France, Van Aert spent July quietly rebuilding his fitness at a high-altitude training camp in the Italian Dolomites. The Tour of Denmark, a five-day UCI ProSeries event, was selected as his testing ground to gauge his readiness for the late-season calendar.[5][6]

Van Aert's path to the general classification title.

Any doubts about his form were instantly erased on the opening day in Aalborg. Van Aert sprinted to victory from a select group on Stage 1, proving his explosive power remained intact. He followed that up the next day with a nail-biting photo-finish win over Alpecin-Premier Tech's Jensen Plowright, and completed a stunning hat-trick by taking Stage 3 in wet and wild conditions.[1][4]

Any doubts about his form were instantly erased on the opening day in Aalborg.

"I don't get many opportunities to race for an overall classification," Van Aert remarked after securing the leader's blue jersey. "That's why I'm really happy to experience this again. It's a great way to wrap up the week."[1]

The final stage into Rødovre offered a pan-flat parcours designed for the sprinters. While Van Aert's Visma-Lease a Bike squad controlled the early breakaway, the closing kilometers were marred by a large crash that split the field.[1][3]

Danish national team rider Rasmus Søjberg Pedersen expertly navigated the chaos, slipping through a narrow gap to claim the final stage victory ahead of Max Walscheid and Tom Crabbe. Van Aert crossed the line safely in eleventh place, officially cementing his overall win.[1][3]

In the final general classification, Van Aert finished 21 seconds clear of Unibet-Rose Rockets rider Lukas Kubis, with Uno-X Mobility's Henrik Pedersen rounding out the podium in third.[1][2]

The flawless comeback fundamentally alters the outlook for the remainder of the 2026 season. With his elbow fully healed and his race rhythm restored, Van Aert now turns his attention to the Vuelta a España, where he will arrive not as a rider in recovery, but as a proven winner ready to contend.[2][6]
