The 2026 Czech Tour kicked off with a thrilling and chaotic bunch sprint in the picturesque spa town of Karlovy Vary, as American rider Riley Sheehan of the NSN Cycling Team threaded a needle-thin gap along the barriers to edge out Netcompany INEOS's Ben Turner. The 163.2-kilometer opening stage, which departed from Prague's Vítězné náměstí before an official start in Hostivice, featured over 2,300 meters of climbing across three categorized ascents. Despite the rolling terrain, the stage ultimately culminated in a fast, technical finale along the banks of the Teplá River, where the sprinters took center stage.[1][2][3]

For the vast majority of the afternoon, the star-studded Netcompany INEOS squad dictated the pace at the front of the peloton. Working diligently alongside riders from NSN and Modern Adventure, the British team controlled the time gap to a determined four-man breakaway, ensuring the race would come back together for a mass finish. Their execution appeared nearly flawless as they navigated the final kilometers, delivering Turner to the front of the pack with just 200 meters remaining. As Turner launched his powerful acceleration, he looked perfectly positioned to finish off his team's sustained, all-day effort.[1][5]

However, Sheehan had timed his counter-move flawlessly, shadowing the British rider on the slight uphill drag to the finish line. Tucked right on Turner's wheel, the 25-year-old American from Boulder, Colorado, spotted a narrow opening on the left side near the spectator barriers. Despite the incredibly tight squeeze that saw the two riders nearly brushing elbows, Turner held his line without illegally blocking the path, allowing Sheehan to power through the gap. The explosive burst of speed secured Sheehan the third professional victory of his career and denied INEOS a hard-fought win.[2][4]

Behind the leading duo, Romet Pajur of the Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe Rookies squad crossed the line to round out the podium in third place, while Modern Adventure's Scott McGill finished fourth and Team Flanders-Baloise rider Nolan Huysmans took fifth. The stage victory not only gives Sheehan the day's honors but also hands him the first yellow jersey of the race, marking the very first stage-race overall lead of his professional career. He will carry that narrow advantage into Friday's significantly more mountainous terrain.[1][2]

Before the sprinters had their moment, the opening stage was defined by an active breakaway that formed shortly after the official start. Czech riders Martin Voltr, former race winner Josef Černý, and Michal Schuran, along with Dutch rider Pepijn Reinderink, established a durable escape group that built a maximum advantage of around two minutes. Reinderink rode aggressively over the day's categorized climbs at Roztoky, Tis u Blatna, and Javorná, accumulating enough points to secure the polka-dot jersey as the race's first best climber. Schuran, who won an intermediate sprint and a categorized climb, earned the day's most combative rider award for his efforts.[1][3]

An early four-man breakaway animated the 163-kilometer route from Prague.

This year's edition of the Czech Tour carries unprecedented prestige, having been officially upgraded to a UCI 2.Pro event on the ProSeries calendar for the first time in its 18-year history. The elevated status has successfully attracted a much stronger international field, including three top-tier WorldTour squads and ten ProTeams. To match the new classification, race director Leopold König and the organizers have designed what they are calling the toughest route in the event's history, featuring nearly 650 total kilometers and an exhausting 10,000 meters of elevation gain spread across the four days of racing.[3][6]

Sheehan and the rest of the peloton will face an immediate and drastic shift in terrain on Friday, as the race abandons the rolling hills for the high mountains. Stage 2 departs from Mladá Boleslav and introduces the first major general classification test of the week: a grueling 16-kilometer Category 1 summit finish at Ještěd. The long, punishing ascent above Liberec is expected to shatter the peloton, forcing the heavier sprinters to the back while the pure climbers and overall contenders finally show their cards and seize control of the yellow jersey.[1][2][3]

Despite the looming mountains, Sheehan took time to savor the milestone victory and praise his teammates for their crucial support in the chaotic finale. 'I think I felt confident we'd catch the breakaway,' Sheehan told race broadcasters following the podium ceremony. 'INEOS rode super-strong all day, and the chaos of the finish, we all watched it last year, we saw how the group split. But I had a phenomenal team to back me up. We played our cards right and they all came together at the final and positioned me perfect. It was a perfect day.'[2][3]
