Google Launches Android 17 and Wear OS 7 with Advanced Multitasking and Creator Tools

The next evolution of the world's most popular mobile operating system has officially arrived. Google began rolling out Android 17 and its smartwatch counterpart, Wear OS 7, to eligible Pixel devices today. While the tech giant has spent the last year heavily promoting its generative AI ambitions, the immediate reality of Android 17 is a highly practical, user-focused overhaul that prioritizes multitasking, creator tools, and granular privacy controls.[1][2][3]

For years, mobile operating systems have struggled to replicate the seamless multitasking of desktop computers. Android 17 attempts to bridge this gap with a new feature Google calls "Bubbles." Moving beyond the simple messaging bubbles introduced in previous iterations, users can now long-press almost any app icon to convert it into a compact, floating window that hovers over other active applications.[1][6][8]

This feature scales dramatically depending on the device. On larger screens like tablets and foldables, these bubbles are docked in a dedicated "Bubble Bar" at the bottom of the display. Foldable phone owners are also getting a significant quality-of-life upgrade for mobile gaming. Android 17 introduces a native 50/50 split layout designed specifically for book-style foldables. The new operating system shifts toward session-based, temporary access. Instead of forcing users to hand over their entire address book to a new app, Android 17 features a system-level contact picker that allows users to share only specific, selected contacts. Alongside the smartphone update, Google launched Wear OS 7 for its Pixel Watch lineup. Despite the wealth of practical features, the industry's most anticipated additions remain conspicuously absent from today's launch. Google's flagship "Gemini Intelligence" suite—which promises agentic AI capabilities and multi-step app automation—is not included in the initial Android 17 or Wear OS 7 rollout. On Wear OS 7, a feature called "Create My Widget" will allow users to generate custom watch face dashboards using natural language prompts. For now, the Android 17 and Wear OS 7 updates are exclusive to Google's own Pixel hardware, starting with the Pixel 6 and newer models.
