Google Bridges the iOS Divide: Android's Quick Share Now Natively Supports Apple AirDrop

The long-standing rivalry between green bubbles and blue bubbles just lost its most annoying friction point. Google's June 2026 Android Feature Drop has officially bridged the gap between Android's Quick Share and Apple's AirDrop, allowing seamless, peer-to-peer file transfers across the two dominant mobile operating systems.[1][4]

Users no longer need third-party apps, cloud links, or compressed messaging workarounds to send a video to a friend. As long as the receiving iPhone user sets their AirDrop visibility to "Everyone for 10 minutes," an eligible Android device can discover the iPhone and beam over full-resolution photos, videos, and large documents directly.[2][4]

This interoperability has been quietly tested and teased for months, originating with the Pixel 10 series and Xiaomi's HyperOS3. Now, Google has formalized the handshake protocol, allowing Quick Share to identify iOS devices and complete the handoff securely without an internet connection.[1][4][5]

The rollout is expanding rapidly across the Android ecosystem. Beyond Google's own Pixel 8, 9, and 10 lineups, Samsung has pushed the necessary One UI 8.5 update to its Galaxy S24, S25, and S26 series, as well as its recent foldables including the Z Flip 7 and Z TriFold.[2][5]

Chinese manufacturers are also on board. Devices like the Xiaomi 17T Pro, OnePlus 15, OPPO Find X9 Ultra, and Vivo X300 series are officially supported, signaling a broad industry coalition to standardize cross-platform sharing.[2][6]

Beyond file sharing, the June Drop tackles the growing epidemic of AI voice cloning and phone scams. A new "Fake Call Detection" feature is rolling out to the default Phone by Google app for devices running Android 12 and newer.[3][4]

The Fake Call Detection system uses RCS technology and caller ID verification to confirm if an incoming call is genuinely originating from a trusted contact's device. If a scammer attempts to spoof a familiar number—a common tactic in modern phishing—the phone will display a prominent warning that the caller may not be who they claim to be.[3][6]

Family safety is also receiving a significant upgrade. The Personal Safety app is expanding its reach to younger users, allowing children under 13 to display vital medical information on their lock screens.[1][3]

These younger users will also benefit from car crash detection, which automatically dials emergency services and notifies preset contacts after a severe impact. Meanwhile, teens gain access to real-time location sharing and "Safety Check" features, allowing parents to ensure their children arrive at destinations securely.[1][2]

Google is also leaning into generative AI for everyday utility. Google Photos is introducing a "digital wardrobe" feature that catalogs the clothes a user wears in their photos, allowing them to virtually mix and match outfits.[1][4]

Circle to Search is getting a fashion-focused upgrade as well, enabling users to circle an entire outfit on their screen to identify and shop for individual clothing items without leaving their current app.[3][4]

Finally, Google Play Books is integrating a Gemini-powered reading companion. Users can tap a new spark icon to ask questions about a book's themes, get page recaps, or clarify character context, starting with thousands of free English titles.[2][3]

While these seven features offer immediate quality-of-life improvements, they also serve as an appetizer. With Android 17 expected to launch in stable form by the end of June, Google is setting a collaborative and highly intelligent baseline for the next generation of smartphones.[2][5]
