In a move that blends high-speed motorsport with corporate philanthropy, Ford Motor Company and NASCAR have unveiled a major new initiative aimed at supporting military families. Announced Wednesday evening aboard the historic USS Midway aircraft carrier in San Diego, the "Proud to Honor Veterans Day Classic" will debut as an annual exhibition race starting November 11, 2026. The event marks a significant expansion of both organizations' traditional military tributes, transforming a standard holiday acknowledgment into a standalone national event.[1]

The centerpiece of the initiative is a dedicated exhibition race that will operate independently of the standard NASCAR Cup Series calendar. The race will exclusively feature Ford's track-only Mustang Dark Horse R vehicles, piloted by Ford Racing drivers, in a format designed to salute all six branches of the United States military. While the exact location of the inaugural track has yet to be revealed, executives confirmed the event will serve as the anchor for a broader weekend of entertainment and fundraising.[2]

The launch event on the flight deck of the USS Midway underscored the scale of the ambition. Against a backdrop of restored military aircraft, more than 1,500 members of the local military community gathered for the unveiling. The evening featured appearances by actor and Marine Corps veteran Rob Riggle, alongside a live performance by the Zac Brown Band, who are also slated to headline the November race weekend.[1]

For Ford, the initiative represents a strategic alignment of its corporate heritage and its racing operations, timed to coincide with the lead-up to the United States' 250th anniversary. Nick Ford, the great-great-grandson of Henry Ford and a director of corporate strategy, emphasized that supporting the armed forces has been embedded in the automaker's DNA throughout its 123-year history. He noted that the company sought a unique way to bridge its deep roots in motorsport with its long-standing military commitments.[3]

NASCAR views the Veterans Day Classic as a natural evolution of its brand identity. Tim Clark, NASCAR's Executive Vice President and Chief Brand Officer, highlighted the mutual dedication between the racing body and Ford. Historically, NASCAR's season concludes in early November, which previously limited Veterans Day tributes to off-track digital campaigns or retrospectives. By creating a newly minted race on the holiday itself, the sport elevates its tribute exponentially, creating a new destination event for fans and service members alike.[2]

Beyond the spectacle of the race, the campaign is anchored by a substantial fundraising mechanism. Ford is launching a limited-edition "Proud to Honor" package for its F-250, F-350, and F-450 Super Duty trucks. The specialized vehicles will feature red, white, and blue design elements, dark exterior trim, and black wheels. A portion of the proceeds from every package sold will be directed to military charities, transforming vehicle sales into direct support for service members.[1][3]

The primary beneficiary of these efforts is Blue Star Families, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting military and veteran families as they navigate the unique challenges of service. The funds generated by the Super Duty sales and the Veterans Day Classic will support programs that help spouses and children manage the difficulties of deployment, frequent relocations, and the transition back to civilian life.[4]

The initiative also includes grassroots community engagement leading up to the main event. Ford Philanthropy has committed to hosting specialized "Ford Driving Skills for Life" programs tailored specifically for local military teens. These safe-driving clinics aim to provide practical, hands-on education to the dependents of service members, further extending the corporate partnership's impact beyond the racetrack.[3]

Industry analysts note that the Veterans Day Classic reflects a broader trend in sports marketing, where leagues are increasingly creating bespoke, holiday-centric events in unique locations. Much like Major League Baseball's "Field of Dreams" game or the NHL's specialized outdoor classics, NASCAR is leveraging the symbolic weight of Veterans Day to craft an authentic, long-term tradition that resonates with its core demographic while serving a tangible philanthropic purpose.[1]

As the November 11 date approaches, both Ford and NASCAR are expected to announce further details, including the host venue and additional musical acts. For now, the launch on the USS Midway stands as a powerful statement of intent—a promise to harness the roar of V8 engines and the reach of corporate America to deliver enduring support for those who serve.[1][2]

The stakes

This partnership transforms traditional corporate holiday marketing into a massive, tangible fundraising engine. By directing proceeds from vehicle sales and a major sporting event to Blue Star Families, the initiative provides direct, real-world support to military dependents navigating the hardships of deployment.
