Encinitas native Jake Marshall has officially taken the number one spot in the World Surf League's Challenger Series standings following a career-defining victory at the 2026 Lexus US Open of Surfing. The win in Huntington Beach marks Marshall's first-ever WSL event victory across any tier of professional competition, ending a five-year pursuit of a major title.[1][3]

The 27-year-old surfer arrived in Surf City USA as a consistent threat on the Challenger Series but lacked a signature win to cement his Championship Tour qualification campaign. He had previously finished as the runner-up at the US Open in 2021, falling just short of the podium's top step.[1][4]

"I can't believe it," Marshall said after being chaired up the beach by his brothers. "This year has been one of the hardest competitive years of my life, and to win this event means so much to me. I never won a WSL event ever, even Pro Junior or QS."[1][4]

The men's final featured a high-stakes, all-Southern California clash between Marshall and two-time US Open champion Kanoa Igarashi. Igarashi, a Huntington Beach local, entered the final as the heavy favorite, looking to secure his third title in front of a massive hometown crowd.[2][5]

The ocean conditions at the Huntington Beach Pier provided a challenging canvas, with smaller surf demanding technical precision and aerial maneuvers. Marshall took an early lead, but Igarashi responded with his signature forehand attack, posting a 7.40 to take control of the heat.[3][4]

Needing a 7.31 to reclaim the lead in the dying minutes, Marshall showed veteran patience. He utilized his priority to catch a crucial wave, executing a series of critical backhand turns on the outside before smashing the inside section. The judges awarded him an 8.00-point ride, sealing a 14.77 to 14.07 victory.[2][3]

The triumph fundamentally reshapes the Challenger Series standings as the tour heads into its back half. Marshall's 10,000 points catapult him to the No. 1 overall ranking, placing him in prime position to qualify for the elite 2027 Championship Tour.[1][2][3]

Despite the loss, Igarashi's runner-up finish significantly bolsters his own qualification campaign, moving him safely inside the cutline. The event also saw major standings shifts for other competitors, with San Clemente's Hayden Rodgers jumping to No. 9 and Brazil's Deivid Silva moving to No. 7 after their quarterfinal appearances.[3]

On the women's side, Australian Sierra Kerr mirrored Marshall's ascent, claiming her first Challenger Series victory and taking the No. 1 spot in the women's standings. Kerr defeated reigning World Junior Champion Isla Huppatz, who moved to No. 4 in the rankings following her runner-up finish.[2][3][4]

The Challenger Series now moves to Maresias, São Paulo, in late September. Marshall will wear the yellow leader jersey for the first time in his career, carrying the momentum of a historic hometown win into the final stretch of the qualification season.[2]
