- The Chip Ganassi Racing driver secured his fifth win of the season at Nashville Superspeedway on July 20.

- The series resumes on August 9 at Portland International Raceway, a track where Palou has historically dominated.
The 2026 NTT IndyCar Series championship is rapidly becoming a one-man show. With six races remaining on the calendar, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Álex Palou has built a commanding 83-point advantage over the rest of the field, placing him firmly on course for another Astor Cup.[1][2]
Palou’s stranglehold on the standings was cemented at the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix on July 20. Starting fourth, the Spaniard methodically worked his way to the front, ultimately holding off Team Penske’s oval master Josef Newgarden in a straight fight to secure his fifth victory of the season.[1][2]
The Nashville triumph halted a brief three-race slide for the No. 10 team and pushed Palou’s points total to 457. His closest rival, Team Penske’s David Malukas, sits at 374 points, while Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood trails closely behind in third with 370 points.
The mathematical reality for the challengers is daunting. With a maximum of 54 points available per race weekend, Palou’s 83-point cushion is effectively worth more than a full race. To merely draw level by the season finale, a challenger would need to outscore Palou by an average of 13.9 points across each of the final six rounds—roughly the equivalent of winning the race while Palou finishes third, every single week.[1]
"I know it's going to be a tough fight till the end, especially being so back-to-back races," Palou noted following his Nashville win, acknowledging the grueling final stretch. "But we're ready for it."[3]
The series now heads to the Pacific Northwest for the BitNile.com Grand Prix of Portland on August 9, a venue that has historically favored the Ganassi driver. Palou clinched his 2023 championship at Portland International Raceway and has stood on the podium there in four of the last five visits.[2]

Adding to his advantage, Palou and Chip Ganassi Racing utilized an INDYCAR extra team test day at Portland this week. Because the team fields a full-time entry in the INDY NXT developmental series, they were granted the additional track time—a crucial benefit given the lack of road-course testing earlier in the year.[1]
For Malukas and Kirkwood, the Portland weekend represents a critical juncture. Both drivers are perilously close to falling 100 points behind Palou, a deficit that would effectively eliminate them from realistic title contention before the series even reaches its final month.[2]
If the challengers cannot mount a counteroffensive in Oregon, their hopes will rest on the unpredictability of the late-season schedule. Following Portland, the series debuts two brand-new street circuits—the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham and the Grand Prix of Washington, D.C.—before heading to the Milwaukee Mile for a doubleheader and concluding at Laguna Seca.
Palou remains cautious about the unknowns ahead, pointing out that past success does not guarantee future results. "Milwaukee is a doubleheader. Although we were really good last year, we didn't do very good at the test," he said. "Markham is a new track. What's going to happen? Are we going to struggle, dominate? Nobody knows."[3]
Despite the variables, Palou's track record on street courses this season—winning three of the four held so far—suggests he is well-equipped to handle the new venues. Unless the challengers can string together a flawless run of victories, Palou appears poised to add another championship to his increasingly historic IndyCar legacy.[2]
