Fast facts

  • Melbourne secured premiership midfielder Tom Sparrow on a five-year deal, fending off Port Adelaide.
  • Port Adelaide locked in star forward Mitch Georgiades until 2029, shutting down interstate interest.
  • Gold Coast retained 21-year-old Bailey Humphrey until 2030 despite heavy Victorian club attention.

  • The pre-emptive signings significantly thin the 2026 AFL free agency pool ahead of the trade period.

The 2026 AFL free agency market has shrunk significantly this week as clubs move aggressively to lock down their marquee talent. In a flurry of mid-August signings, Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Gold Coast, and Adelaide have all secured key signatures, fending off lucrative rival offers and ensuring their core groups remain intact well into the future.[1][2]

Leading the wave of retention is Melbourne premiership midfielder Tom Sparrow, who has turned his back on unrestricted free agency to sign a massive five-year extension. The 26-year-old is now tied to the Demons until the end of 2031, rejecting a highly lucrative long-term offer from Port Adelaide that had been on the table for much of the season.[1][6]

Sparrow has produced a career-best season under new Demons coach Steven King, averaging 22.5 disposals and 3.7 clearances per game. Melbourne list manager Tim Lamb praised the midfielder's growth, noting that Sparrow has evolved into one of the competition's most impactful on-ballers and a valued leader within the club's four walls.[1]

Key AFL contract extensions signed in mid-August 2026.

While Port Adelaide missed out on Sparrow, they secured a crucial victory of their own by locking away star forward Mitch Georgiades. The 24-year-old spearhead signed a fresh two-year extension, tying him to Alberton until at least the end of 2029 and taking him past his impending free agency year in 2027.[2][5]

Georgiades has been a revelation since returning from a serious knee injury, kicking 46 goals from 20 games in 2026 and leading the competition for marks inside 50. His signature shuts down intense speculation regarding a potential return to Western Australia or a move to a Victorian club.[2][5]

Georgiades has been a revelation since returning from a serious knee injury, kicking 46 goals from 20 games in 2026 and leading the competition for marks inside 50.

Port Adelaide list manager Jason Cripps highlighted Georgiades' work rate and athleticism, calling him a fantastic mentor for the club's younger forwards. The retention is a major boost for senior coach Josh Carr as the Power prepare for the likely departure of superstar midfielder Zak Butters at season's end.[2][5]

Further north, the Gold Coast Suns successfully retained 21-year-old forward Bailey Humphrey, who signed a two-year extension to remain in Queensland until the end of 2030. Humphrey had been heavily linked to several Melbourne-based clubs, including Carlton, Hawthorn, and Collingwood, but ultimately chose to repay the Suns' faith.[3]

List managers and coaches are prioritizing list stability to avoid off-season bidding wars.

"I can go into the off-season with a clear head and just focus on footy and the footy club," Humphrey said following the announcement. The former first-round draft pick noted that the Suns gave him the opportunity to live out his childhood dream, and his commitment reflects a growing sense of unity and belief within the Gold Coast playing group.[3]

Meanwhile, the Adelaide Crows bolstered their defensive stocks by signing 24-year-old key defender James Borlase to a three-year extension. Borlase, who has enjoyed a breakout season with 16 senior appearances, turned down rival interest to remain at West Lakes until the end of 2029.[4]

Crows General Manager of List Management Jarryd Roughead commended Borlase's relentless effort, noting that the defender forced his way into the AFL side through sheer hard work in the SANFL. Borlase echoed the sentiment, stating it was always his intention to stay a Crow for the long term.[4]

This wave of pre-emptive strikes dramatically alters the landscape of the upcoming AFL trade period. With Sparrow, Georgiades, Humphrey, and Borlase officially off the board, rival clubs who had banked on luring them away must now pivot to alternative targets in a rapidly thinning free agency pool.[1][3][5]

For the clubs that secured the signatures, the extensions provide crucial salary cap clarity and list stability. By avoiding protracted bidding wars, Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Gold Coast, and Adelaide can now channel their full attention and resources toward the upcoming draft and targeted external recruitment.[1][2][3][4]
