The National Women's Soccer League is bringing its biggest stage back to the nation's capital. On Wednesday, the league announced that Audi Field in Washington, D.C., will host the 2026 NWSL Championship on Saturday, November 21.[1]
The title match, presented by Google Pixel, is scheduled for an 8 p.m. ET kickoff. For the fifth consecutive season, the championship will be broadcast in primetime on the CBS Television Network and streamed live on Paramount+, underscoring the league's cemented status as a major television property.[1]
Audi Field, a state-of-the-art, 20,000-seat soccer-specific venue located in the Buzzard Point neighborhood, serves as the full-time home for the NWSL's Washington Spirit and Major League Soccer's D.C. United. The stadium previously hosted the NWSL Championship in 2022, where 17,000 fans watched the Portland Thorns defeat the Kansas City Current.[1][3]
The decision to return to the District is largely a reward for the explosive growth of the Washington Spirit's local fanbase. The Spirit made Audi Field their permanent home in 2023 and have since cultivated one of the most raucous and reliable environments in global women's soccer.[3]
Last season, the Spirit became only the fourth women's soccer club in the world to average more than 15,000 fans across a full home schedule, finishing with an average attendance of 15,796. That momentum has carried into 2026, with the club selling out three of its first five home matches and maintaining an average crowd of over 15,500.

NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman praised the city's embrace of the sport. "Washington, D.C. has become one of the premier destinations for women's soccer, with an incredibly engaged fan base, a vibrant soccer culture and a community that continues to champion the growth of our game," Berman said in a statement.[1]
Local officials view the championship as both an economic driver and a cultural milestone. Angie M. Gates, President and CEO of Events DC, noted that hosting the event aligns with the city's identity as a sports capital. "We are excited to deliver an incredible experience for soccer fans from across the globe, while showcasing the power of sports to unite the community," Gates said.[2]
The announcement arrives during a unique period for the NWSL. The league is currently observing a month-long break from June 1 to June 28 to accommodate the men's 2026 FIFA World Cup, as several NWSL teams share stadiums that are being utilized for the global tournament.[4]
To maintain momentum during the hiatus, the NWSL launched a "Summer of Soccer" initiative, featuring a nationwide bus tour and fan activations in major markets. Announcing the championship venue during this window helps keep the women's league in the national sports conversation while global attention is fixed on the men's tournament.[4]
The road to Audi Field will be highly competitive. The 2026 NWSL playoffs will feature an expanded eight-club format, kicking off with quarterfinal matchups the weekend of November 6-8. Those matches will be distributed across a variety of broadcast partners, including ESPN/ABC, CBS, Paramount+, and Prime Video.
Semifinal action will follow the weekend of November 13-15, setting the stage for the two remaining clubs to travel to Washington. Tickets for the November 21 final will go on sale later this summer, with early presale access available through the league and the Washington Spirit.[1]
