Key points

  • Luka Mijatovic won the 100, 200, 400, 800, and 1500-meter freestyle events at the Junior Pan Pacs.
  • He broke the US 17-18 National Age Group record in the 800m freestyle with a time of 7:44.52.
  • Mijatovic set new meet records in both the 400m and 1500m freestyle disciplines.
  • Team USA won the overall team title with 527 points, heavily outdistancing Japan and Australia.

Seventeen-year-old Luka Mijatovic achieved something rarely seen in modern aquatics this week: a complete sweep of every individual freestyle event at a major international meet. Competing at the 2026 Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Vancouver, the Californian captured gold in the 100, 200, 400, 800, and 1500-meter freestyle disciplines.[1][2]

The sheer physical range required to win a 49.53-second sprint and a 15-minute endurance race in the same week defies conventional swimming specialization. Mijatovic's historic campaign culminated in seven total gold medals, as he also anchored two victorious U.S. relay teams.[1][2]

His most statistically impressive swim came in the 800-meter freestyle, where he shattered the U.S. 17-18 National Age Group record with a time of 7:44.52. The performance erased the previous benchmark of 7:45.19 set by Luke Whitlock at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials.[2]

Mijatovic swept every individual freestyle distance from the 100m sprint to the 1500m endurance race.

In that 800-meter race, Mijatovic executed a devastating negative split, swimming the second half of the race 2.2 seconds faster than the first. He opened in 3:53.35 before coming home in a sensational 3:51.17, pulling away from the field to win by roughly seven and a half seconds.[2]

He also dismantled meet records in the 400 and 1500-meter events. In the 400 freestyle, his 3:43.67 erased the previous Junior Pan Pacs benchmark of 3:48.36, set by Australia's Josh Staples in 2022, by nearly five seconds.[1]

He also dismantled meet records in the 400 and 1500-meter events.

The 1500-meter final saw him lead from start to finish, clocking 14:57.45 to become the only swimmer in the field to break the 15-minute barrier. He split a blistering 26.66 on his opening 50 meters and maintained a relentless pace to secure his fifth individual crown.[1][2]

Mijatovic's record-breaking 800m swim featured a rare negative split, swimming the second half faster than the first.

Mijatovic's times are drawing comparisons to historical greats. His recent 400-meter personal best of 3:43.45 makes him the fastest American teenager in history, with only Australian legend Ian Thorpe swimming faster before turning 18.

His 200-meter freestyle victory of 1:46.04 also narrowly missed the 17-18 National Age Group record of 1:45.99, a mark set back in 2003 by Michael Phelps. Mijatovic already owns the 15-16 standard in the event and has another year to claim the older bracket's record.[2]

Propelled by Mijatovic's dominance, the United States amassed 527 points to comfortably win the overall team title. Team USA finished with 23 gold medals and 51 total medals, heavily outdistancing Japan (395.5 points) and Australia (336.5 points).[1][2]

Looking ahead, the Pleasanton Seahawks product is committed to the University of Texas, where he will train under Bob Bowman, Phelps' career-long coach. As he transitions to the senior international stage, Mijatovic is rapidly positioning himself as a central figure for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.[2]

Team USA comfortably claimed the overall team title in Vancouver with 51 total medals.
