Most motorcycles use a shared sump design, meaning the exact same fluid lubricates the engine pistons, the transmission gears, and the wet clutch. A wet clutch relies on a specific, engineered amount of friction between its alternating steel and friction plates to engage and transfer engine torque to the transmission.[8]

If you pour a modern API SN "Resource Conserving" car oil into a motorcycle, those friction modifiers coat the clutch plates. The immediate result is clutch slip under hard acceleration, where the engine RPM rises but the rear wheel does not accelerate to match. To solve this incompatibility, the Japanese Automotive Standards Organization (JASO) introduced the T903 specification in 1998. It tests oils specifically for wet clutch compatibility, measuring three distinct parameters: the Dynamic Friction Characteristic Index (DFI), the Static Friction Characteristic Index (SFI), and the Stop Time Index (STI).[1][2]

ZDDP is a highly effective anti-wear additive crucial for protecting the high-pressure contact points in high-revving motorcycle engines, particularly those with flat-tappet camshafts.[7]
