Latest

On October 24, Eli Lilly announced that its investigational weight-loss drug retatrutide reduced sleep apnea events by up to 34.3 per hour in Phase 3 trials. The results shifted the average trial participant's disease classification from severe down to moderate. In patients without type 2 diabetes, the medication drove up to 22.2 percent body weight loss over 80 weeks.

Earlier in the month, by 07:04 UTC on October 3, Phase 3 trial results showed the drug drove up to 20.8 percent weight loss in patients with type 2 diabetes. The medication suppressed appetite and increased resting energy expenditure, allowing nearly all participants on the highest dose to achieve standard blood sugar control targets, with many normalizing their glucose levels entirely.

How the story developed

On July 11, Eli Lilly reported that its experimental drug retatrutide achieved a 28.3 percent average body weight reduction over 80 weeks in its Phase 3 TRIUMPH-1 trial. The results matched the efficacy of bariatric surgery.

Retatrutide is a first-in-class triple-agonist medication. It targets three distinct metabolic hormones simultaneously: GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon receptors.

By the end of the TRIUMPH-1 trial, over 65 percent of participants receiving the highest dose of the medication reduced their Body Mass Index below the obesity threshold.

The trials also recorded adverse reactions to the treatment. Gastrointestinal side effects resulted in an 11.3 percent discontinuation rate among participants on the highest dose, a rate slightly above that of existing obesity medications.

The subsequent trials in diabetic patients demonstrated a magnitude of weight loss that addressed a historical gap, as diabetic patients have historically lost significantly less weight on incretin therapies compared to non-diabetic patients.
