On October 23, the Jio Platforms initial public offering became the first public issue globally to receive more than 10 million applications. The milestone was reached on Friday with five hours remaining before the bidding window closed, surpassing the previous reported global record of approximately 9.7 million applications set by Waaree Energies. By midday Friday, the Rs 30,213-crore offering was subscribed nearly 7.5 times.
Qualified institutional buyers led the bidding, subscribing to their reserved portion more than 16 times, while the retail investor segment was booked over two times.
This followed the opening of the public subscription window on October 21, when institutional investors fully subscribed to the offering within 100 minutes. Qualified institutional buyers broke convention by deploying capital immediately, making it the fastest-clearing mega-issue in Indian market history. The offering values the digital and telecommunications company at approximately Rs 2.5 lakh crore.
How the story developed
On June 19, Reliance Industries formally initiated the initial public offering process for its digital and telecom arm, Jio Platforms, approving and filing the draft prospectus. The offering was structured as a 100 percent fresh issue of 270 million shares, with no existing investors selling their stakes. The process was led by the next generation of Reliance leadership: Akash, Isha, and Anant Ambani. Analysts estimated the company's valuation could reach between $130 billion and $180 billion.
The capital raised was designated to fund 5G network expansion, artificial intelligence infrastructure, and debt repayment at the telecom subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm. The digital company is backed by global technology companies Meta and Google.
By October 17, Jio Platforms entered the valuation testing phase to finalize its price band, seeking to raise up to $3.2 billion. This target positioned it to surpass the Life Insurance Corporation of India to become the country's largest public listing. The marketing strategy aggressively targeted Gen Z retail investors, drawing parallels to Dhirubhai Ambani's 1977 retail-focused Reliance listing. To provide liquidity for employees to participate, Reliance Industries released October salaries 15 days early.
On October 19, institutional investors placed a record $30 billion in bids for the anchor portion of the offering. The demand from global sovereign wealth funds and domestic institutions oversubscribed the available ₹8,110 crore anchor allocation by more than 30 times. Global sovereign wealth funds and all top ten Indian mutual funds secured allocations at the top of the ₹1,119 price band.
What to watch
- Jio Platforms will allocate the proceeds from the offering to repay borrowings at its telecom subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm, and to fund capital expenditure in technology and digital services.
