Washington Nationals Sign Ace Cade Cavalli to $47 Million Extension Following Breakout Comeback Season

The Washington Nationals have secured the cornerstone of their rotation, locking up right-hander Cade Cavalli with a four-year, $47 million contract extension that keeps the 28-year-old ace in the nation's capital through at least 2030. Announced Friday, the deal includes a 2031 club option that could push the total value to $70 million. It caps a staggering comeback for a pitcher who lost nearly three full seasons to Tommy John surgery and rehab setbacks, only to return and dominate the National League.[1][2]

The ensuing reconstructive elbow surgery wiped out his 2023 campaign, and a cascade of setbacks—including a severe bout of the flu—delayed his return until late 2025, when he finally managed 10 starts down the stretch.[1]

Taking the ball as Washington's Opening Day starter, he has anchored the staff with a 12-5 record, a 3.12 ERA, and a 1.17 WHIP over 31 starts. His 194 strikeouts in 164 2/3 innings rank fourth in the National League, and he has surrendered three earned runs or fewer in 29 of his 31 outings—the highest mark in baseball this season.[2][4]
