Bo Davidson Makes Historic MLB Debut as Giants Snap Losing Streak Against Twins

San Francisco Giants rookie Bo Davidson became the first player in the franchise since 1931 to record a hit, a steal, and a run in his major league debut, sparking a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

The stakes in late September usually belong to the contenders, but on Monday night at Oracle Park, a 24-year-old undrafted rookie hijacked the spotlight. Stepping into the box for his first major league at-bat, San Francisco Giants outfielder Bo Davidson laced a 103.8 mph single to right field, setting the tone for a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins.[1][3]

Davidson didn't stop at first base. He promptly stole second and came around to score on a Brett Harris single, completing a statistical trifecta that the franchise had not witnessed in nearly a century. According to MLB records, Davidson became the first Giant to record a hit, steal a base, and score a run in his major league debut since Johnny Vergez did it on April 14, 1931.[1][3]

Davidson achieved a statistical milestone not seen in San Francisco since 1931.

"He's got a very charismatic personality, he's extremely confident which is a huge part of coming up here as a young player," Giants outfielder Drew Gilbert said of Davidson during his postgame television interview with NBC Sports Bay Area. "Super bright future ahead for Bo."

Gilbert himself provided the heavy lifting to ensure Davidson's debut ended in a win. The 25-year-old outfielder went 3-for-4, driving in three runs and launching his 11th home run of the season in the fifth inning. His two-run single in the second inning pushed the Giants' lead to 4-0, providing a cushion the pitching staff would desperately need.[2][4]

The Giants were forced into an impromptu bullpen game after starter Blade Tidwell exited in the fourth inning with elbow discomfort. Tidwell had allowed just one run over 3.1 innings before summoning the trainer. Tristan Beck took over, throwing 2.2 hitless innings to earn the win, while Trent Harris locked down the ninth for his second save.[2][4]

For the Twins, the loss represents a brutal stumble in their late-season push. Falling to 73-84, Minnesota squandered a nine-strikeout performance from rookie starter Zebby Matthews. Despite the high strikeout total, Matthews surrendered five earned runs on eight hits across five innings of work.[5][6]

The Giants' offense outpaced Minnesota despite a nine-strikeout start from Zebby Matthews.

Minnesota's offense struggled to capitalize on the Giants' early pitching change. Brooks Lee launched his 24th home run of the season to lead off the fourth inning, and Emmanuel Rodriguez added a solo shot in the eighth—just the second of his young career—but the lineup mustered only four total hits on the night.[3][4]

Davidson's arrival offers a silver lining for a San Francisco club that was officially eliminated from the postseason and recently swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2023, the 6-foot-1 slugger battered minor league pitching this season, posting an .888 OPS with 29 home runs and 94 RBIs across Double-A and Triple-A before getting the call.[1][2]

San Francisco's lineup generated 10 hits against Minnesota pitching.

As the Giants close out their 2026 campaign with a final homestand, the focus shifts entirely to evaluating pieces for 2027. If Monday night's 103.8 mph introduction is any indication, Davidson intends to be a central part of that blueprint.[1]
