MLB Playoff Picture: AL West Deadlocked and NL Wild Card Chaos Define Final Weekend
As the 2026 MLB regular season enters its final weekend, the Astros and Rangers are tied for the AL West crown, while a looming nor'easter threatens to disrupt the Phillies and Diamondbacks' battle for the final National League wild-card spot.

One hundred and fifty-nine games down, three to go, and the American League West is completely deadlocked. The Texas Rangers and Houston Astros enter the final weekend of the 2026 season tied at 79-80, setting up a three-day sprint where every pitch carries October weight.[6]
The Astros kept pace Thursday night in West Sacramento, outlasting the Athletics 7-5 behind a historic performance from rookie Lucas Spence. Called up just a day prior, Spence launched the first three home runs of his major league career, driving in five runs to ensure Houston did not blink.[1]
Meanwhile, in Arlington, the Rangers closed out their home slate with a gritty 3-1 victory over the New York Mets. Josh Jung and Corey Seager provided the necessary muscle with solo home runs, while rising pitching talent Kumar Rocker delivered five stellar innings to anchor the staff and stop a three-game skid.[6]
"Coming into today, it just felt like… we still have a heartbeat, still have a pulse, and it felt like we'd come out and play the game with our chest out and our chin up," Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said following the victory.[6]
Because Houston holds the head-to-head tiebreaker with a 9-4 record against Texas this year, the Rangers must finish with a better record outright to claim the division. Texas now heads to Minnesota to face the Twins, sending two-time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom to the mound for the series opener, while Houston remains in Sacramento to finish their series against the Athletics.[6]
In the National League, the chaos is dictated as much by the standings as by the sky. The Philadelphia Phillies sit at 87-72, holding a two-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks (85-74) for the final wild-card spot.[3][4]
But a massive nor'easter is currently bearing down on the East Coast, threatening to wash out Philadelphia's final three games against the Tampa Bay Rays at Citizens Bank Park.[4]
Arizona, riding a five-game winning streak after an 18-hit explosion against the Rockies, owns the tiebreaker over the Phillies. If the Diamondbacks sweep the Padres in San Diego and the Phillies' games are postponed, Major League Baseball could be forced to schedule a high-stakes Monday doubleheader to decide the final bracket.[2][4]
Elsewhere, the champagne is already flowing. The Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres officially punched their postseason tickets on Thursday, joining a 12-team field that is rapidly taking its final shape.[2][5]
The Cubs edged the Miami Marlins 2-1 in a game that saw Pete Crow-Armstrong steal his 40th base. Paired with his major league-leading 45 home runs, the steal made Crow-Armstrong just the seventh player in MLB history to join the exclusive 40-40 club.[2][5]
Chicago will also get a massive reinforcement for October, as designated hitter Alex Bregman returns to the lineup Friday against his former team, the Boston Red Sox, just days after suffering a facial fracture from a foul ball.[7]
In the AL Central, the Cleveland Guardians (83-76) hold a slim one-game lead over the Chicago White Sox (82-77), who secured their first postseason berth since 2021 after a 100-loss season a year ago. Because Chicago holds the head-to-head tiebreaker, Cleveland must hold them off outright to secure the division crown and a coveted first-round bye.[2][3]
By Sunday evening, the math will be final, the brackets will be locked, and the sprint to the World Series will officially begin.[3]
