Shohei Ohtani Returns as Dodgers and Padres Clash in High-Stakes September Preview
Shohei Ohtani returns to the Los Angeles lineup Wednesday as the Dodgers chase a first-round bye and the Padres fight to secure home-field advantage in the Wild Card round.

The 2026 postseason arrives a week early at Dodger Stadium tonight. When the Los Angeles Dodgers host the San Diego Padres in the middle game of their final regular-season series, the stakes stretch far beyond the National League West. The Dodgers are chasing a first-round bye and the National League's top overall seed, while the Padres are fighting a three-way gridlock to bring playoff baseball back to Petco Park.[1][3]
But the gravitational center of Wednesday night's matchup is the return of the sport's biggest weapon. Shohei Ohtani is set to be activated from the 15-day injured list after resting a compromised left knee and right biceps inflammation. Before the IL stint, Ohtani had hammered 30 home runs and posted a .902 OPS, though his production cratered to a .136 average across August and September as he tried to play through the pain.[2][5]
Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts confirmed the two-way star will slot right back in at designated hitter. "I would say if he was a five, he's probably an eight or a nine right now," Roberts told reporters Tuesday, noting Ohtani's mechanics look considerably sharper after weeks of rest. The Dodgers survived his absence brilliantly, going 13-3 down the stretch to lock up the division.[2][5]
Now, the math narrows to seeding. At 97-60, Los Angeles has trimmed its magic number for a first-round bye to just one. However, catching the Milwaukee Brewers for the No. 1 overall seed requires help. Milwaukee holds a two-game lead over the Dodgers and owns the head-to-head tiebreaker, reducing the Brewers' magic number to clinch home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs to four.[3][4]
For San Diego, the urgency is immediate. The Padres dropped Tuesday's series opener 7-0, snapping a blistering run that saw them win 13 of their previous 14 contests. That loss left them at 87-70, deadlocked with the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies in the Wild Card standings.[1][4][6]
Because San Diego lost the season tiebreakers to both Chicago and Philadelphia, a three-way tie would drop the Padres to the No. 6 seed, forcing them on the road to face the Atlanta Braves. To secure the top Wild Card spot and host a best-of-three series in front of a raucous Petco Park crowd, the Padres need to finish ahead of the Cubs outright. Their magic number simply to clinch a berth remains at two.[1][4]
San Diego's rotation strategy adds another layer of tension. By starting ace Michael King on short rest in Tuesday's 7-0 loss—where he surrendered five runs in four innings—manager Craig Stammen burned his best arm in a gamble that didn't pay off. King is now tentatively lined up for Sunday's regular-season finale against Arizona, but the Padres desperately want to save him for Game 1 of the Wild Card series next Tuesday.[1][4]
That puts immense pressure on the rest of the San Diego staff to secure the clinch before the weekend. Tonight, they have to navigate a Dodgers lineup that just extended its home winning streak to 11 games.[4]
The Dodgers will counter with Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who has looked every bit the ace Los Angeles paid for, carrying a 14-8 record, a 2.51 ERA, and 178 strikeouts into the final week. He will be tested by a relentless Padres offense featuring Fernando Tatis Jr. (174 hits, 36 steals) and Manny Machado (28 home runs).[6]
