For centuries, the world knew a somber, brooding Michelangelo. Generations of art historians praised the gravity of the Sistine Chapel ceiling, writing volumes on the master's restrained, muddy palette and his heavy, sculptural shadows. They accused the Vatican of transforming a moody, sculptural masterpiece into a flattened, candy-colored cartoon, tailored for the bright lights of the Japanese television network, Nippon TV, which had funded the $3 million project in exchange for exclusive broadcast rights.[3]

They argued that Michelangelo was a purist who worked almost exclusively in buon fresco, leaving very little a secco on the ceiling. Cross-sections of the plaster viewed under electron microscopes revealed that the dirt and glue sat entirely above the original pigment layer.
