Qualcomm's new Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 chip puts a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) and Wi-Fi 7 directly inside wireless headphones and earbuds. Announced this week at the 2026 Snapdragon Summit, the platform allows audio wearables to process AI tasks—like real-time translation and voice assistance—and stream lossless audio entirely on their own, bypassing the need for a connected smartphone.[5][6]
The hardware shift centers on compute power and bandwidth. The Elite Gen 2 features a micro-NPU that delivers up to three times the AI processing capability of the previous generation, according to Qualcomm's technical specifications. It also integrates Wi-Fi 7 alongside Bluetooth 5.4, providing the data pipeline necessary for 24-bit 96kHz lossless audio streaming directly from cloud services.[6]
"We are transforming hearables from simple audio receivers into independent computing platforms," said a Qualcomm executive during the Snapdragon Summit keynote. For consumers, this means upcoming premium earbuds will not drain a phone's battery to run complex noise cancellation algorithms or process voice prompts.[4]
The chip also supports camera integration for a new class of smart glasses and mixed-reality headsets. The Elite Gen 2 can process visual data locally, allowing wearable cameras to identify objects or read text aloud without sending the image to a phone or the cloud for processing.[1][3]

The inclusion of Wi-Fi 7 solves a persistent bottleneck in wireless audio. While Bluetooth bandwidth caps out around 1 to 2 megabits per second, Wi-Fi allows for multi-megabit streams. This enables true uncompressed audio playback, a feature audiophiles have demanded since streaming services began offering high-resolution tiers.[2]
Gamers also see a direct benefit from the Wi-Fi integration. The Elite Gen 2 reduces audio latency to under 20 milliseconds when connected over a local Wi-Fi network, cutting the delay in half compared to standard Bluetooth connections and eliminating the lip-sync issues common in fast-paced competitive gaming.[3]
Major audio manufacturers have already secured shipments of the new silicon. The first consumer devices featuring the Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 are expected to hit retail shelves in the first quarter of 2027, targeting the $250 to $350 premium tier where advanced features justify higher margins.[4]
The success of this independent-wearable push now depends on battery chemistry. While the chip itself is rated to consume 25% less power during standard Bluetooth playback, maintaining an active Wi-Fi connection and running on-device AI models will test the physical limits of current earbud batteries. Manufacturers will have to balance the new capabilities against the expectation of all-day battery life.[2]
The stakes
By moving AI processing and Wi-Fi directly into the headset, this chip severs the tether to the smartphone, allowing earbuds to handle real-time translation, voice commands, and uncompressed audio streams independently.
The essentials
- The Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 chip adds a dedicated NPU and Wi-Fi 7 to wireless headphones.
- On-device AI processing enables real-time translation and voice commands without a smartphone.
- Wi-Fi 7 integration allows for 24-bit 96kHz lossless audio streaming and sub-20ms latency.
- The chip supports camera integration for smart glasses to process visual data locally.
- First consumer devices featuring the chip are expected in the first quarter of 2027.
